@eschaton @bitsavers Good points. Here is another perspective. For many, Excel took the place of 4GLs. People could get things done in an ad hoc way when they couldn't get IT attention/resources. These aren't programs in the way you or I think about them, but they fulfill a need. This happens continually in large and small businesses.I believe that at a minimum LLMs will amplify the power of these non-programmers to write more “code” that would otherwise go unwritten. See MS Office Copilot.

@SDF Love it! Running on a PDP 11-70 just like college. Thanks for making this available.

A Family Portrait of some compact Macs. Starting at the left is my wife's original 1989 Mac SE/30 which I finally got working again. It's tricked out with 64MB of RAM, a #BlueSCSI, and a working floppy drive. To the right is my Faux Mac (https://github.com/jpasqua/FauxMac) with a 5” 640x480 display and a #raspberrypi 4. Next to it is the first small Mac replica I made with a 3.5” 640x480 display and a RPi 3. All are running Photoshop. The FauxMac is definitely the fastest.#retrocomputing

Someone asked me privately how I got the image without banding on the CRT (see attached example). I don't have a camera which allows me to synchronize the shutter speed to the refresh rate. I've found that if I take a video on my phone in the right lighting (not overly bright), the video won't have the banding artifacts. Instead it will have some tearing. I can extract a single frame to get a reasonable shot, albeit lower res than a picture. Better approaches are welcome.

@PopeASDF @Quinnypig Kinda reminds me of the saying: "You know how to make a million dollars in the restaurant business? Start with 2 million.”

With the kind help of @amoroso I’ve added support for Medley Interlisp to FauxStar. I didn't have to modify a single line of code - just a script. Now you can choose to install/run one or more of Mesa, Smalltalk-80, or Lisp. All ran on the Dandelion historically. Now I just need to design the actual model. Some nice folks at a computer museum have offered to take measurements of a system they have in storage. Once I have that I'm off to the races.https://interlisp.org#retrocomputing #lisp

I'm planning to get my amateur radio license soon. Who should I be following on Mastodon? I don't expect to ever have an antenna mast in my back yard, but I would like to be proficient, and, let's face it, it opens a whole new world of electronics devices that I will “need”.#hamradio @geerlingguy

@twylo Agreed. One of the things that irritates me most is the convergence of discovery going out the window and good documentation becoming passé. You can’t figure it out and you can’t read about it.

I signed. I also see the ARRL is requesting input for their response, but as far as I can see, they didn't specify how to provide those comments. Perhaps I am missing something obvious.https://mastodon.radio/@K3LOE/114201246629249112

@PopeASDF I just updated my post. The ARRL sent out an email with a link where you can supply input. You must log in to do so.

@PopeASDF That's right. Submitting directly to the FCC is a more daunting task. I'm hoping that some hams who are versed in the process will write notes on how to submit effectively to the FCC and create some source material that others can adapt / build upon for their own submissions.

@interlisp I run Medley on a Raspberry Pi housed in a 3D-printed 30% scale replica of a Xerox 1108 computer. It also runs Mesa and Smalltalk 80. It is usable on the small monitor, but viewing remotely is a less cramped experience.
