@Unixbigot @futurebird Cats’ evolution of the ability to see and navigate beyond three dimensions makes perfect sense when you remember that Douglas Adams taught us that mice are vast, pan-dimensional beings who are operating Earth as a giant computer to determine the ultimate question to life, the universe, and everything, and we are just seeing their projection into our three-dimensional space.

@prahou @pluralistic That’s what I do. I got tired of wysiwyg tools being discontinued over the years and leaving me with an uneditable website. Last year I wiped out the last vestiges of the last discontinued tool and restarted with a nearly empty html file. I suppose I should put something in it for the 30th anniversary of my domain on October 25th.

@moragm @bodhipaksa As the old Jacobite song goes:By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,Where muldrich, furrin tourists were ever wont to plae,On the Bonnie bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.Chorus:O ye'll build a high road, and we’ll block the low road,For we've won in Scotland afore ye,But ye and yer Flamingos will never brash our laund,On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.'Twas there that we planned it, in yon shady glen,On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond,To fight for the loch and the highland hills we luve,And the muin coming out in the gloaming.ChorusFor once riches win and the wildflowers thin,And in darkness the waters befyling. The broken heart it kens nae second spring again,And the waeful niver cease frae their criunt.Chorus(New lyrics by Brian Hawthorne, with apologies to actual speakers of Scots.)

@futurebird I went out to dinner last night. It was a bit chilly, so I put on my green wool sweater knit by a cooperative on Lewis in 1990 (http://ica-atom.tasglann.org.uk/index.php/co-chomunn-na-pairc-kershader-isle-of-lewis-2;isad) and a green wool hat knit by my son’s fiancée. Just because they looked nice together. I had no idea it was the Irish holiday.

@futurebird We don’t notice how strange they are because they are really good at mind control.

@futurebird C. I have every cable, but when I need one, I can never find where I stashed the right one so I buy another.

@sbourne @mattdm @futurebird They certainly were. Cinnamon cruller was my normal if I was getting coffee. If it was just donuts, I would get a jelly donut and a Boston cream.

@futurebird @sbourne @mattdm I consider Krispy Kreme doughnuts to be lovely but much too fluffy and sweet for my taste. They taste are more like dessert pastries than doughnuts to me. Now that DDs are terrible, my favorites are when I fry up a batch of cider doughnuts at home myself, or pick them up fresh from one of the local farms that make them in the fall. So, question for KK lovers: Do you eat them mostly as breakfast cakes or as after-dinner desserts?

@futurebird @sbourne @mattdm Nah, knowing those things means you are from the coast of the North Atlantic. Most of New England hasn’t ever seen fresh fish, let alone clams, and most of our bad weather comes out of Canada or the Great Lakes!

@futurebird It is sad how many people in our culture still suffer from extroversion. Where are the medications or treatments for helping people with this disability? I would absolutely buy copies of this book and share them with people who I know have this terrible condition. I know extroverts are part of human neurodiversity, but their acting out in public and in private affects us all.

@futurebird I am trying to remember which SF author extrapolated from fiber optic interconnects to directional line-of-sight laser communication between nodes in a closely linked swarm of computing devices. Where nodes kept track of each other’s relative physical location in space so they knew which direction to aim one of their comm lasers. Also it’s possible this is just something I dreamed of reading, in which case feel free to run with it. If you put the nodes in close orbits, you can optimize inter-node communications by moving nodes around in real time so that when a set of nodes need to exchange data frequently, they can move closer to one another and reduce communications lag. Swarm behavior is all current research being done now.As always, of course, if you want this to last a long time, you either need a source of reaction mass for those positioning thrusters, or you have to bite the bullet and go for a magical reactionless propulsion system. Of course, if you already have that in-world this is a great application for it!

@futurebird I had a Mormon friend when I was younger who had to go out on mission for the church. He said many Mormons choose big cities for their mission, ostensibly because they are hotbeds of people needing saving but really because if you have the opportunity to get away from a stifling life for a bit, why wouldn’t you choose a place like NYC? If you notice there is usually a younger and an older missionary together, just like the old Soviet border guards.

@Camel @schratze How do you know that is the public offer? If their site allows me to see the content without seeing ads, then that is their public offer. If they won’t let me see their site without ads, then I don’t want to see their site. How is this hard to understand?
