Received a job offer this weekend. It's an IT/Systems position at a state university. Most would call it a career mistake: leaving a huge and universally known technology corporation for significantly lower compensation and possibly less relevant experience.But I think it will conflict far less with my ethical values, it's local and they seem to care about their people. Plus the job is covered by a union and the healthcare options seem much better.Anybody want to share some wisdom?

@kzimmermann I discovered that the Nix package manager works neatly on a RHEL box that had a very limited official repository. I think it's well worth a try, its fairly easy to remove (packages and all) if you don't like it.

@xpil there are lots of suggestions here, but I would suspect the WiFi card. If it's a realtek chipset, I would put money on that being the cause.I switched my laptop to an Intel card and it has been 100x better. I'm not sure if there are any other brands that compete in the area of performance in Linux.

@urusan It's not socially acceptable to say that it's not worth it. 😅Since becoming a parent, I've decided that that I'm performing a duty to society. Viewed through that lens, it is worth it. But without that aspect? Yeah... no.

@codewiz is this a good-faith nitpick or just trying to derail and distract from the message?For those reading along: each electric vehicle "produces" some amount less emissions than a combustion vehicle. Take all those "savings" combined. The electricity used for bitcoin causes more emissions than that value.It is *not* an argument for EVs. Simply a comparison. In fact, it could be used as a pretty good argument that EVs are not a sufficient solution.

@urusan I've always loved watching the garbage truck.Adulthood kinda ruins it for me: did we ever stop to consider that the garbage itself is the problem, rather than our ability to pick it up quickly?
