I'm a software developer working on a bunch of #Fediverse things: #Emissary, #Bandwagon, and bandwagon.fm - with several more in the pipeline. It's a pretty strange mix that doesn't really fit today's Fediverse, but it makes sense when you see the end goal.I got an opportunity at #Fedicon to explain myself, so here it is:https://spectra.video/w/eod3ybLu7sHzAEMihej8kmIt's not the greatest talk about Fediverse tech, but it's the best I've got so far, and I hope it inspires you to make great things here with me.

And: let's do that for instances, too.Let's work out #FungibleHosting so that an instance owner could just up and move their instance from one hosting provider to another in an afternoon. In theory, it could be the same import/export data format, but for the whole instance instead of for a single user.@cochise

@wjmaggos @musicman @blocsonic @wiloma @dlikdh Agreed. “Do it with ActivityPub” is a nice start, but not enough. There are a few other ideas out there (like sharing and remixing playlists) but we can do better.I’m open to any ideas you all have, no matter how crazy they are

@wjmaggos @Interledger Yes. I think payments work like like reverse homeopathy: If you only have one <insert dangerous thing> it's really bad for you, but if you have FUCKIN' ALL THE DANGEROUS THINGS, you're super safe. It's weird and counter-intuitive, but true :)

@ilja Cool, thanks! I've looked at Forte (just a bit)I think each of these is also covered in some FEPs ~~ I'm literally sitting at my laptop right now, wrestling with conversation containers (FEP-171b) and the context property (FEP-7888). But I'm gonna make it happen in #Emissary.I'm not sold on FEP-ef61 (portable objects) mostly because it looks *really* hard to do in a backwards-compatible way. I don't think "splitting the network" would serve us well.

@ilja Yeah, FEP-ef61 is still on the radar, but probably the back burner for now.Another issue is that I don’t see a mechanism for actually *syncing* the content from one server to another.. so that still has to be addressed by some other spec (LOLA, for instance, if I could figure out how THAT works)But.. once we have a “sync” in place, I’m definitely up for trying to tie an actor or a piece of content to some sort of DID.We’re in for a wild couple of years, that much is certain!

#Spotify has earned its ire from the #Music community - maybe mostly because of the increasing #enshitification of the platform. But here’s a really great summary of a presentation from the CEO that demonstrates HOW to grow software from nothing.https://www.reddit.com/r/SaaS/s/8YE2C9MY8rThis☝🏻is the playbook that the #Fediverse competes with, and a blueprint for how we can win at this game.

This one stuck out to me: “Pick a wedge, then keep widening the aperture only when the core is working. Music => Podcasts => Audiobooks.”While “working” is an infinitely debatable term, I’d say the Fediverse has “microblogging” wedged pretty nicely. So how do we grow from here?My take is: bring more content, and more ways to use this cool “universal inbox” that is #Mastodon. Let me subscribe to private feeds (Substack) or be a patron to a podcast (Patreon)How would YOU grow our wedge?

@wjmaggos @skillstopractice Fantastic thoughts.I love the idea of all these different kinds of apps using ActivityPub (possibly with an RSS fallbackI built #RSS into Emissary for this exact reason. I can browse RSS and ActivityPub feeds in the same inbox “folder”. Now I just need to make improvements to the inbox that are specific to Audio, Video, etc. One day at a time, right?

Pspsps #FediverseI'm collecting info for a Federated #Map server. Something that would let people share info and comment on what's going on at specific places out in the world. There are lots of ways this might be useful to our community, so I've written a super-rough-draft spec on my website.https://benpate.dev/annotated-mapsJust like #Bandwagon, this app would sit on top of #Emissary so most of this is already built. We just need to connect the dots.#AskFedi #FediHelphttps://mastodon.social/@benpate/115335093845889524

@wjmaggos @lorenzosmusic Account migration will be done by the end of the year. Wanna take a go at launching your own Bandwagon server?

Oi #Fediverse..Check out this 2min walkthrough of #Emissary's upcoming data migration tool. It's the last big feature I'm delivering in 2025.It uses the "LOLA" data portability spec to transfer account data from one server (like Bandwagon.fm) to a new one (like bandwagon.your-band-here.biz)No CSV files required. Just authenticate and approve, and everything just moves. There's tons more to do, but I'm confident this will be live by Christmas. 🤘🏻https://clip.place/w/joEazgBP38z81WsZZQNd1r

@billycheesesteak @strk I don’t have that on the roadmap right now. I’m hoping that reading the metadata on your MP3s would be enough. But that is its own challenge, which is why that I s still not available. What would a bulk editor look like? Is there an example out in the wild that I could compare to?

Soooo... #JustBetweenUs There's already some big stuff in the works for 2026:The Social Web Foundation (@swf) has kicked off a project to bring real end-to-end encryption to the Fediverse. It's a big undertaking, with real financial backing from the @sovtechfundCheck out the announcement: https://socialwebfoundation.org/2025/12/19/implementing-encrypted-messaging-over-activitypub/And, I'm very excited that #Emissary is one of the projects selected to participate in the work alongside the @bonfire team. 1/

What will this mean? We're working with extensions to ActivityPub to bring top-tier encryption into the Fediverse - the same industry standard that powers Android, Apple, Discord, and others. We're aiming to release our first versions mid-year.#Bonfire and #Emissary are great choices because each is a sort of "application builder" that can be molded to fit many different situations. It's going to be a massive undertaking, but I'm looking forward to the results@swf @sovtechfund @bonfire

@kidlightbulbs I’ll say “yes” but I’m definitely biased. :)Yes, it’s “yet another music site” but you can sell your music with your own strip account and it is self-hostable (if you’re into that) And, I just released migration tools to let you take your whole profile and network to any other bandwagon server. So, you can sign up on bandwagon.fm but you’ll never be locked into it. 🤘🏻Correct me, but I don’t think any other platform makes that guarantee.

It's live.I've just released my final software update for 2025, which includes 100% fidelity account migrations between #Bandwagon servers. This long-overdue enhancement means that everyone can take their identity to any other #Emissary server on the #Fediverse. EVERYTHING moves with you.. music uploads, album sales, everything. And, your followers are forwarded to your new address. There's plenty more, including a 2025 recap, and some plans for 2026 here: https://bandwagon.fm/2025-december
