@witchfynder_finder Some people say “X is overrated” and _also_ mean that X is bad. Which is annoying to me because when I say something is overrated, it may even be something I like a lot.

@witchfynder_finder Chocolate and Paris are the most and second-most overrated things in America. In case you were curious. Bacon seems top 10, possibly top five.

Oh! I guess here's a thing that's at least sort of in the spirit on #MastoMonday. Last year I read almost 50 books and I wrote a blog post where I did a micro-review of each one: http://garbled.benhamill.com/2020/01/06/2019-reading-in-review

@marnanel @jaycie There was a piece I read some years ago about how corporations are “slow AI” and that we’re already living in the dystopia that’s Musk and friends fear. They’re already optimizing for things other than human well-being. I could try to find the link if you like.

@marnanel @jaycie I think this is it? https://boingboing.net/2017/12/29/llcs-are-slow-ais.html I didn’t remember it being a video, but Stross is the person I remember talking about it. So maybe I just read this thing?

I’ve been thinking, for some reason, about Indiana Jones recently. And how I kinda want more of it, in a sense, but, like… better. I like the Nazi-punching, the globe trotting, the action-archeology and the, like, secretly-real mystical shit.Like, it’s pretty straightforward to take out the casual sexism. You could also easily make it way gayer and less white. You could clarify the anti-fascist politics to make an actual statement, but…Is it possible to extract the exoticism (or orientalism?) without doing so much damage to the genre that it’s not longer recognizable? Is American foreign adventurism built in? What would you replace those things with to make a version that didn’t just paint the denizens of the locales Jones visits as, e.g., “desert people” or whatever?I feel like this is possible, but I’m looking for others’ perspectives while I mull on how.

Once again, the LGBTQ+ ERG at Under Armour, UA Unified, is participating in the Hill Country Ride for AIDS. It is a bike ride through Central Texas's hill country that raises funds for local non-profits that help those affected by HIV and AIDS. I'm riding and hoping to raise $500 this year. If you have the capacity, please consider donating: https://hillcountryride.greatfeats.com/ben-hamill/donate

@portpupper Oh yeah. A new IP is totally what I had in mind. I just... didn't have a better word for the genre than invoking the big iconic example.

Every (US) election cycle, I see a lot of debate on the fediverse about how people should vote or people shouldn’t vote and that. I’ve read a bunch of takes on both sides. I feel like a lot of people are talking past each other and I hope to shine a light on the spot I think is the origin of that. Before I get too much further here’s where I’m at: Voting is a good tactic for harm reduction because of its ease. But don’t do it at the expense of direct action/organizing you might do.1/6

The fact that I can only add 4 choices to a poll just ruined what was going to be a perfectly terrible shitpost. I wanted you all to know.
