Enjoyed the British seaside at its best yesterday. ~10C, ~30mph winds, coat, hat and gloves and very few people around. Of course we had ice cream. I also discovered that the met office app now uses different wind icons when you’re at the coast.

It's worth letting any elderly / vulnerable people you know about this spray insulation scam, apparently some of them are very convincing, using thermal cameras to pretend that they show "mould and damp" when they demonstrate nothing of the sort. https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/beware-of-scammers-peddling-dodgy-spray-foam-loft-insulation-aYS5G4Q8Scow

Today’s incredible-in-2025 discovery: a qualified legal professional redacting “sensitive” parts of a document by drawing a black square over the text but leaving the text in the PDF to be revealed by highlighting it.

So Philips Hue just flat out lied. I can no longer manage the lights in my house using the Hue app. The new terms are over 12k words of legalese, which clearly no reasonable person is actually reading. The new terms remove the support for Local-only operation which is the whole reason I bought into Hue lights in the first place. Support's response is basically "Yep, we've fucked you".

This seems like a real gap in the consumer protection regulations, the product works fine when purchased, but the manufacturer then fucks around with it beyond the control of the seller. It's not faulty in the traditional sense, but after some years the product is no longer 'As described'. Especially challenging when starter kit initially bought at the edge of what you'd consider reasonable lifetime, but have added new bulbs much more recently.

Thankfully I am not reliant on the Hue app for day-to-day use, and I can move them away from the Hue hub to a generic Zigbee controller (that I already bought when the signs of enshittification started increasing a few months ago), so I do have options, but I shouldn't have to. I feel especially stung as I specifically picked a product that worked locally without requiring cloud nonsense. Lesson learned I guess.
