@tante Agreed, the few things that have irritated me on my Fairphone are Google things.But... it would also be a much less attractive phone without that stuff - not least because there are various paid apps that I use that only come through Play.I think I could, quite easily, convince family and the like to buy this phone - without Google apps it'd be a complete non starter.

@neil @stefano This is a tricky one - nowadays, if I release something, I tend to recommended using the prebuilt image (I *do* try and make sure container-less isn't too complex). The thing is - every GH issue, email/DM I get from someone stuck because of an out-of-date local dep (or something conflicting etc) sucks up time - I don't mind helping, but containerisation reduces the need to do so (freeing me up to do other stuff).I agree though, that it shouldn't be the only documented option.

@damien @neil @stefano Yep, that's an entirely reasonable concern. The other thing of course, is you can end up in the position of having an image but no way to (re)build because the app was all built in CI/CD (that's since gone away) and the dockerfile just copied the result in

@tchambers @wedistribute If it becomes too problematic, I imagine threads'll just switch to allow listing rather than blocklisting. Mastodon has that mode too - it obviously limits your reach, but it's the only semi-complete solution: anything blocklist based is susceptible to side-stepping like this.

@aral rather than redirecting into a temp file and then relocating it, you can just pipe via teeexpand my.file -t 2 | tee my.fileThe original fails because redirections are processed first (so you truncate the file before running expand on it). That's not the case with tee though

@stfn Every time I read about someone else's smart-watch experience I realise how unknowingly lucky I was to choose a Bip.But it also means that, like you, I'm quite unlikely to replace it with another smartwatch. If you ever wanted to mess around with getting local only collection working on that Garmin though, looks like it works with Gadgetbridge - https://gadgetbridge.org/basics/topics/garmin/

@strypey @glent @priryo Dictators also drive cars, but we don't generalise based on that. The means (in this case, nicking a CEO) is a very different topic to the ends for which it's employed. There's a gulf of difference between a company refusing to filter speech that's critical of $govt and refusing to intervene when CSAM is being shared

@stfn Thanks, checking to see if there was anything listed locally led to me falling down an unexpected rabbit hole. There's a pre-built pwnagotchi listed for sale - not heard of them before, but now I wanna build one: https://pwnagotchi.ai

Just noticed that upgrading the firewall broke IPv6.I really loathe how many things just bail if v6 fails rather than falling back to v4.

Good news, #google has unfucked the #Nextcloud app on Play store. It's not as great as it sounds, though, because it was also Google who needlessly fucked it in the first place.https://www.theregister.com/2025/05/17/google_nextcloud_android_permission/

New #blog post: Containerising and deploying #Calibre server to read an annotate #ebooks in a browserI've got a book than I need to read and take notes on over the next few months, but I'm long out of the habit of being able to sit and read.To maximise my opportunity to dip in and out, I wanted to make the book available on every device I have - allowing a few spare minutes to be used here and thereThis post talks about using Calibre's content server to do thathttps://www.bentasker.co.uk/posts/blog/general/containerising-and-deploying-calibres-content-server-to-allow-web-annotations.html

RE: https://mastodon.social/@verge/115643961192930771Meanwhile, people who acquire their content from other sources remain able to watch on whatever the hell they want...Restrictions on cast has always annoyed me - the Channel 4 app in the UK lets you cast on catchup, but not when watching something live. It's probably driven by a licensing or ads thing, but that shouldn't be made **my** problem

@aral @1password How weird and frustrating...The highlighting works fine for me.Looking at 1password's about, though, I'm running 8.11.16.35 which appears to be 3 releases out of date, so it probably breaks in a newer release.Browser on another my machines has 8.11.18.36 and highlighting works there.Which leaves the 8.11.20 and 8.11.22 updates as likely culprits
