@brian Is the output a programming language, like Python? I think that soon, the output will be another neural network, that you run locally.

@petergleick This seems like such a venture capitalist mindset: fund a bunch of startups hoping that one is a unicorn that out-pays the losers. Yeah, it can work as a business strategy. But people like to forget: so much of the fundamental science and technology was originally developed with govt tax dollars. Most talented ppl come from good schools and free countries. People like to ignore all the infrastructure of human talent and knowledge.

@foone When I was about 18-19 years old, I had a job where I would maintain some used computer equipment. We would clean it, thoroughly test it, repair it if necessary, and then send it out as a rental to the next customer. I used to scrub the keyboards in the sink, then wash them in a (normal) dishwasher, and let them dry for several days. Worked like a charm 99% of the time. (These had mechanical key switches, mind you.) Normal dishwasher, normal soap.

@futurebird I remember the first cloned cats looked nothing like the original clonees. So we know it's not just DNA. I imagine there must be a lot going on during fetal development? Identical twins share the same DNA and the same uterus at the same time.

@futurebird @Lana I've often thought that private school should be illiegal. If rich ppl want their kids to have a good education, then they need to make the educational system better for everyone.

@futurebird Isn't that exactly what StackExchange (and the others, like StackOverflow) are? I've been using those for many, many years.

@foone wow, that is some wonderfully strange engineering. They *handbuilt* a very custom, strange heatsink??? And put the wrong sized fan on it? This is some college freshman stuff, haha. I'm here for it!

@futurebird @petergleick There's a certain type of fallacy: if the solution isn't perfect, then it's not worth doing. (Is there a name for this type of fallacy?...)Like: "vaccines don't always protect you." (Yeah, but they help, alot.)Or: "even if you wear a seatbelt, you can still die in a car crash." (Yeah, but they do save lives in many cases.)I'm not sure what the name of that fallacy is, but it pisses me off.

@futurebird I know of some parents who have set up Minecraft servers for their kids (and all their friends) to play on. Seems like a good idea to me. The parents know absolutely every person who has an account on their Minecraft server.

@futurebird My current job (which is one of the best jobs I've had in a long time), I got through a recruiter that I had worked with before. My current boss knew of my previous boss (who I was working for at the time), and so was aware of my work indirectly, even if he didn't personally know who I was yet.
