LOLOLOLOL"The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that it has issued an emergency order, grounding New York Helicopter Charter, Inc., the company behind last week’s deadly crash. (...)"But this is where it gets interesting. On April 13, 2025, the FAA reportedly reached out by phone to Jason Costello, the Director of Operations of NY Helicopter. The FAA requested that NY Helicopter voluntarily cease operations due to safety concerns, until the FAA and NTSB complete their investigation."Costello agreed that NY Helicopter would cease operations as requested, and roughly 30 minutes later, Costello confirmed this in writing, via email."However, 16 minutes after that email, Michael Roth, the Chief Executive Officer of NY Helicopter, communicated via email to the FAA that he didn’t authorize cessation of operations by NY Helicopter, and also that Costello was no longer an employee of NY Helicopter. Yes, all of that happened in the 16 minutes between when the two emails were sent."With the company not voluntarily complying with the FAA, it’s now being forced to do so. Below you can find the full statement from the FAA."Can't wait for Costello to sue Roth for wrongful termination personally. Going after assets of the bankrupt shell company is probably pointless, but this sort of action but an officer of a company may be grounds to pierce the veil.

@hypeav The understanding that Gateway was a bad idea is beginning to percolate through the consciousness of the space crowd. It was driven in large part by the legally mandated waste of money and effort on SLS, If SLS is killed, NASA becomes free to develop a more rational architecture for the return to the Moon, dispensing with the Gateway. To observe the Overton window moving, see this article at the TSR:https://www.thespacereview.com/article/4935/1

@ignaloidas @sun The Cirrus SF50 jet with a parachute became somewhat common nowadays. This video has a very short segment of testing the chute at offset 01'38":https://youtu.be/YtTmXBl7S08?t=98#aviation #cirrus

Bad news from Uvalde (KUVA): the on-field accessible restaurant burned down. The management promises to rebuild, and asks to patronize their other locations such as "Broadway 830", "The Local Fix", "The Smoothie King". The Local Fix is the closest, but even so it's a 2 mile walk one way.

VAS posted a video of HondaJet making a landing under autoland, in support of certification. I checked on the Internet and the autoland capability for HondaJet was announced in 2022, as part of the "Elite II" generation. But apparently it was not certified at the time, only promised. Something does not add up. But at least it works.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eijEPsSdqg8#aviation #honda

I'm going to subtoot anonymously about answering with "Roger".I think I've read this anecdote in "Say It Again, Please". A guy requested the controller (possibly the author) to approve an aircraft repositioning, but the aircraft in question was located on the apron. Apron is generally a so-called "non-movement area", which the Ground or Tower do not control, and thus they do not accept responsibility. The controller replied: "Sorry, but you are in a non-movement area. We cannot authorize or deny your requested movement."The guy then said: "Well... We're just to taxi about then."The legal answer in this case is the shorthand "Roger", but the controller didn't want to be seen authorizing a movement in a non-movement area, however indirectly, so he replied: "I have received and understood your last transmission."For a long time thereafter, everyone on the frequency acknowledged instructions or informations with "I have received and understood your last transmission." Because it's damn funny.(see a screencap from Pilot-Controller Glossary)

@WiredForFlight You can see the impact site in the video. They were banking about 70 degrees, trying to avoid the hangar. Intersected it with the lower wing and cartwheeled onto the roof. The crew climbed out unassisted. The rumor at the field is, they forgot to lower the gear. When they realized it, they went around and something went wrong.

Australia published a report on October 2023 fatal crash of an R66. It was a mast bump, but it's instructive how exactly it happened. To begin with, the helicopter was cruising at 115 kts, which is 45 kts higher than the maximum for significant turbulence conditions. In addition, the pilot didn't react appropriately to a low-G event. Instead of applying a gentle aft cyclic to restore the loading of the rotor, he applied left cyclic to counteract the roll.

"The use of codeine can cause CNS depression as well as increase the risk of gabapentin’s effects on the CNS. The toxicological results also indicated the pilot’s use of delta-8 THC. Delta-8 THC has the potential to alter perception and cause impairment. ...The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s loss of control due to spatial disorientation while operating in instrument meteorological conditions. Contributing to the accident was the pilot’s impairment from the prohibited substance; however, the extent of impairment could not be determined."Psycho potheads strike again.Even went IFR.

@CapitalB The crew possibly mistook an abandoned airbase Cheshnegirovo for the destination airport Plovdiv.
