@10leej I switched everything but my laptops to #FreeBSD. It will be fun to see you try.

@james @10leej Wow. What a disappointing result. I actually thought it was lame that Ubuntu and Fedora were on the poll at all because they are so common. What's interesting about seeing someone use the Red Hat Beta Edition for a year?

@Tilopa I had to think about why this sounded so much like a sermon. There's the vocabulary but it's more than that. It's because you lay out the forbidden and promise salvation to those who abstain. The content of the post is irrelevant. Structurally, it's illogical and mimics the rhetoric of religion.I say that as someone who probably agrees with most of your political positions.

@EU_Commission The only thing I can get onboard with here is the anti-tracking provision. There are some major problems with the American tech companies, but attempting to micromanage them through legislation isn't the solution. Micromanagement is just begging for unintended consequences.

@al1r4d I would think that you would want a 2 core VPS so you can dedicate a core to Alpine.I have run Alpine via Bhyve and gave it 1 core and the performance was fine. You won't find many distros that can survive off less resources.

@urusan I think one thing libertarians in particular conflate is the ethics of a system with the ethics of results.Basically, there's more than one way to skin a cat. There are vastly different systems of distributive justice and state influence, which in and of themselves are ethically neutral. It's the results that are ethical or unethical.I don't care how much capital is owned by the state. I care what the state does with the capital it does own.

@urusan I guess, put another way, I think we focus on the wrong systems. We focus on economic systems and usually for the wrong reasons. The systems we should focus on are electoral systems and governing systems. It doesn't matter what economic model you choose if those systems are broken. Conversely, a well run democratic government can make a libertarian, socialist, or whatever in between work to the benefit of society.

@ajroach42 Do you do inventory management? Because, if not, the coupon basically functions as the item in the cart because it alters the store manager to include the poster.

@ajroach42 I see what you mean--it might be confusing for the user. The harder way would be to whip a script together. The easier way would be to just require both products to be in the cart for the coupon to take effect (this functionality is built into to Woo). Then the challenge would be communicating that effectively to the user.

@10leej At this point, I no longer see any benefit to Ubuntu. It used to be an easy to use Debian. Now the first thing I would do with an Ubuntu install is remove the stuff that makes it Ubuntu. Plain Debian is easy to setup now. They've dug their heels in on the Snap gambit, and I won't contribute to that paying off.

@10leej The technical aspects aside, I find the idea of centralizing all Snaps in the Snap Store to be Canonical's attempt to gatekeep Linux software.I agree with the concept of a containerized solution that works across Linux distros, but Snap is 1) the least portable solution and 2) the only one that only works with a single repo.

@10leej Red Hat is definitely attempting the same thing with Flathub, but it's not a distinction without a difference that alternative Flatpak repos could exist (obviously, Red Hat is banking on that being too inconvenient to be a reality).Personally, the horse I try to back is AppImage. They work how a user expects an application to work (basically, like macOS or Windows). It's unfortunate that Red Hat and Canonical ignored a good solution because of not-invented-here.

@m0xee @phoronix Most of my computers are Macs and none of them run macOS. They literally cannot run macOS unless I use an ancient version.10+ years ago, I would run macOS as my primary OS and I would dual boot into Linux (mostly just to teach myself Linux). Linux was. . .not great. Things like trackpad support, going to sleep, etc. were just broken. Thanks to the efforts of Linux developers who prioritized the Mac, these issues are now resolved and my computers continue to be useful.

@m0xee @phoronix I don't think it makes sense to purchase Mac hardware right now with the hopes that Asahi will fulfill its promise. I'm just hoping that when those Mac users think their perfectly good hardware is old that the hardware can be sold and become useful.I don't suspect it's common for someone to have a MNT and a MacBook as their two options. Will Asahi reach its goals? I dunno, but I see it as a worthwhile effort, even if it's just a fun technical challenge.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @mike805 @nerdeiro "Do remember that Elon timelines can be more aspirational than perfectly realistic."That's a nice way to say that he's a liar.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @mike805 @nerdeiro If a person consistently promises unbelievable timelines when they need to raise capital or their company's stock needs a boost, and then it becomes clear years later that they had no conceivable reason for making such a projection, they are obviously just lying.I'm not sure what the rest of your drooling over Musk has to do with my assertion that if he's publicly promising an achievement in an unrealistic timeframe he's just lying.

@jimsalter When I told gptbot to piss off in my robots.txt the next day I suddenly started receiving massive (and roughly equal) traffic from supposed Firefox and Chrome users who can apparently read as fast as a bot and know which files in my CMS to look for that aren't public facing.Cloudflare is helping some, but it's like playing a game of whack-a-mole.We need legislation to make robots.txt legally enforceable. It should be a no trespassing sign.

@jimsalter @spineless_echidna They are truly a scourge to the internet as a whole. People focus on the energy consumption of the GPUs, but the constant bot strain on websites everywhere cause everyone to use more energy and bandwidth.
