@Computeforloot @augieray I don't leave a loaded gun outside of my safe, and I DON'T have any children. If I am not carrying my gun, it is in my safe. I live alone and do it. Why is it so hard for families with children?

@augieray @GwladysPendlebury @Benevans @Computeforloot I do think the US has a couple key differences that do contribute to gun violence that is not entirely related to guns. This stems back to jim crow and the redlining practices of that time. They created the culture of the poor inner city black ghetto. The right love to point out that black people contribute to so much crime, but that is because of historical systemic racism. This creates a tension that may not exist in other countries such as australia or japan. Even if they had guns, they likely wouldn't have the gang violence issue we have. Also, the income inequality we have combined with a lack of proper social safety nets just further pushes people into poverty. Creating hopelessness. This combined with a lack of proper mental Healthcare increases gun violence and suicide.

@Benevans @augieray @GwladysPendlebury @Computeforloot those societies are almost monolithic in racial makeup. They also don't have the deep history of systemic institutional racism that we have. The racial tensions we have are just not present in Switzerland.Another thing is they don't have is a war on drugs in the same way we do. Because of historical redlining creating poor inner city black ghettos, you find a lot of drug use there. Especially because it is the primary fundng source for gang activity. This causes further institutional racism in the form of racist policing and disproportionate enforcement. Further increasing the racial tensions. It is basically a snowball effect.

@Benevans @carlos @GwladysPendlebury @augieray @Computeforloot I agree. The consolidation of news media under a few large for profit corporations is absolutely a threat to democracy. Money ruins journalistic integrity. It is a massive conflict of interest.I'm not sure how we solve that problem however. Platforms like mastodon are a start. But I don't think it is enough to fix it

@gregswift @cynblogger @dcjohnson I think the reason beto lost Texas was because of his"Hell yes we are coming for your ar-15s"

@gregswift @cynblogger @dcjohnson OK, firstly, I support reasonable gun control. Universal background checks, licensing, mandatory training, safe storage laws, ERPOs, etc.I support most laws that are based on evidence to stop gun violence. Assault weapons bans are not that. The AR-15 is not some super special extra deadly killing machine. It is a small caliber carbine. No more deadly than any other rifle really. It also happens to be the most popular rifle in America. Particularly because it is easy to use. This makes it safer, not more deadly. It shoots a .22 caliber round. The reason it is safer is it is less likely to go through the person you are shooting, thereby reducing collateral damage. A .45 handgun like the 1911 has more chance of overpenetrating than an AR-15.It just happens to look scary, that is why the left is going after it. Mostly because it looks cool.

@gregswift @cynblogger @dcjohnson In what way? Just because I don't agree with the focus on the AR doesn't mean I don't support meaningful gun reform laws. I just want them to be based on evidence and what will be actually effective. Banning the AR will just drive the violence to other platforms. Prohibition doesn't work. We learned this with alcohol and the war on drugs. Banning the most popular rifle in America won't magically make them disappear. We need to treat this as the systemic problem it is. Guns being in the hands of people who shouldn't have them are a part of the problem. But the issue is so much larger. Income inequality, lack of social safety nets, zero tolerance policies in schools, the drug war, institutional racism, gang violence, lack of access to proper mental healthcare and regular healthcare, the media, for profit prisons, inequality in the justice system, etc. All of these are drivers of gun violence.

@gregswift @cynblogger @dcjohnson an actual gun ban will just result in a civil war. I don't think anyone actually wants that. And I will admit that I probably misunderstood what you said.

@dcjohnson @gregswift @cynblogger well, to be honest if it came down to a total gun ban, I would probably join in on the side of guns.I don't want civil war, I just want kids to stop dying in our schools. But I also support the right to keep and bear arms. I don't think reasonable gun control is something that anyone should be against. Show me a law that will actually lower gun violence, and I am all for it.But I will not support total confiscation. I think that is a bridge too far, let alone it being impossible to do.

@Benevans @carlos @GwladysPendlebury @augieray @Computeforloot But who determines what the truth is? So much of what the news does nowadays is editorializing. It is all opinion based. Who determines who's opinions are the truth?I agree, we can probably outlaw outright lying for news organizations, but there are so many ways to spin something while still technically saying the truth. And then there are large implications for freedom of speech of we start regulating the 4th estate.

@TilopaSo off topic, but your comment inspired me to write a poem.In depths of night, the shadows stirred,As ill-omened forces darkness heard,A demoness they sought to bring,From Hell's abyss, a wicked thing.Conjured forth from fiery pit,Infernal realms, where shadows flit,A union born of darkest arts,To plague mankind, and pierce their hearts. The demoness, a specter dire,A twisted form of blackest fire,From hellish depths, she rose with glee,To torment man, and set pain free.In shadows cast, and twilight's sway,She dances wild, and leads astray,A curse on all, her laughter rings,As demoness, humanity's suffering brings.

@Tilopa is the government silent? Or is it just the republicans?

@Tilopa I agree completely. The republicans deny the undeniable facts about climate change, because they are in the pockets of the oil companies. But the democratic party has been pretty vocal in it's desire to move us away from fossils fuels. We probably would be there except for cars without the obstructionism from the right. They deny that gun violence is a problem. And even if I may not 100% agree with the democrats on gun control, it is clear that zero regulations is not the answer. They stick their heads in the sand and hope the public won't notice their obvious greed.Without them, I think our government would be a lot more effective. We just have to be careful not to become a nanny state. I don't really approve of governments regulating the size of my soda. But the republican way is not right either.

@Tilopa I'm mostly the same way. I don't have much interest in dating, casual sex is not something I am into. I will go out occasionally with my brothers friends when they go bowling or to a movie. But dont really have any friends of my own.I don't necessarily think that that is because there is something wrong however. It may be just who you are. I would like kids someday, but being gay that is unlikely to happen. But other than that I am happy by myself. Maybe you just need to be happy with yourself as well.

@Tilopa huh, that sounds a lot like me as well. Though a good bit of it for me might be the fact that I am autistic. But most of the things in that opening paragraph fit. 😅Especially the internal fantasy thing. Though I typically only engage in it before I go to bed.

@Tilopa The first rule of attempting a coup is to actually effect it. It has always and should always be illegal to overthrow the government. It was illegal when the founding fathers did it, and it is illegal now. All those MAGA 2A idiots think overthrowing the government is legal and a right. Yes, it is a right, but only if you actually do it. If you fail, you go to jail.

We need to provide free breakfast, lunch, and dinner to all students regardless of the income of their parents. Schools should not be charging for food for anybody. Schools are funded by taxes, it is criminal that we charge children to eat.#school #schools #schoollunch #schoollunches #hunger
