@kravietz Mind you I also think everyone who is physically able to should cycle whenever possible. If everyone did, if this were just normal, the roads would be much safer.

@kravietz as a Canadian who grew up with cold winters and hot summers, I strongly agree re: insulation in the UK. I am giving up motored public transport (including buses and trains) inside a certain area for Lent, to get back into the habit of cycling more. It will be... interesting.

@kravietz When I was cycling a lot I didn't really think anything of it, but eventually I got out of the habit of using my bike for journeys I didn't know well, and then I had a bunch of health challenges that left me exhausted and only really cycled very short journeys. Then when one of the health things started getting better (plantar fasciitis), I started walking those short journeys instead. And suddenly I... wasn't cycling much any more at all. Oops.

@kravietz I have a bunch of chronic healthcrap which makes cycling more appropriate sometimes depending what my joints and energy levels are up to, but in general, yes, both is good.If I *don't* do a certain number of steps per day my walking mobility goes downhill pretty fast.

So, I have a Bandcamp page with some old recordings on it:http://artsyhonker.bandcamp.comBut my brother's band is *also* there! COVID-19 stuff is hitting him pretty hard, both of his dayjobs have dwindled to almost nothing.http://ponytails.bandcamp.com

@sean maybe the fat there is less dense than it was but the skin takes longer to catch up with changes?

@masu This but for bicycle panniers. I don't really carry a purse/handbag since giving up skirts, dresses and trousers with no pockets, but my panniers are always full of assorted junk, some of it literally rubbish.

Hey, sometime after I finish my PhD......would anyone be interested in being in a Fediverse Virtual Choir to sing some of my work so I can put recordings online?Eric Whitacre did this (not on the Fediverse) and it worked super well. I... definitely don't have his resources, but I can probably film a conducting track that people can sing to.

@pettter @sean Also, often these are people who had ten or twenty times that number of followers elsewhere. But engagement here, away from the algorithms, works a bit differently, and they will have to change the way they interact accordingly. It's going to be a bit weird here for a few weeks, I think.

@dazego @pettter @sean So, what I see happening if the current rate of influx keeps up is simply that admins and servers can't keep up, and either close registration to new members, or get de-federated from the rest for harbouring nazis etc. And that in turn will make people who are heavily invested in their existing networks not want to be here, because it isn't "everybody".

@dazego @pettter @sean ...at which point the rest of us defederate from those and continue having a quiet life. *shrug*

@dazego @pettter @sean I'm already doing things like turning off boosts a lot of the time just to quiet things down. But boosts also drive discoverability etc, so if enough people turn them off, things slow down again.

I am supposed to be working on PhD stuff but I am stuck on Rainy Fascism Plague Island and enough people are acting like This Is Fine that I feel permanently unsafe. Any actions that aren't about increasing my own and my household's safety and security are very, very difficult right now.

@interfluidity ...I don't think we currently expect firms to "thrive or die on their own revenues" without any subsidy. We subsidise them through allowing below living wages. We subsidise them through not holding them fully accountable for the costs of environmental damage.
