@sundogplanets I can't even wrap my head around why somebody would want to do this as a service. (I don't need you to write out an explanation; I don't want to take up your time that way. I will look it up.) I think this is one of the stupidest things I have seen proposed recently. Next thing you know we'll have LED billboards in space or... whatever. That's not the future I want! I want dark nights and to be able to see the Milky Way from my house, and for birds not to get lost in their migration paths and healthier sleep and... I guess I want to time travel back to the 1200s, when there were no satellites and no electric lights. Grrrr.

I am at it again. Making crème brûlée means having tons of leftover egg whites, so I looked up a gluten-free angel food cake recipe. I made that today with the egg whites from this batch of crème brûlée that I'm making for my mom's birthday celebration tomorrow. It is still a chestnut crème brûlée, but I am not finishing the top with roasted chestnuts this time. That is too much work! I will probably be making a berry sauce for the angel food cake, though, because it does look like it turned out well, and I think I have some frozen berries in the freezer.I believe we have decided on a pizza party, but I'm not sure that my mom likes pizza. That means me loading my pizza oven and its stand and accoutrement into the car tomorrow. But that gives me a chance to clean the car out! I've still got four tables in it from last week's harvest party.It was nice to cook things today. It felt like I had a little time at home and to myself, and it was rejuvenating. I often find cooking to be relaxing, especially when it turns out well.

My culinary torch crapped out on me! Ended up having to broil the crème brûlée under the broiler and broiled unevenly. So they look ugly, but they taste fine. That's what I get for buying a torch for under $20. Lesson learned. 😖

@publius @cstross This. 100%. We seriously missed out not keeping our passenger train infrastructure and improving it with more light rail between cities and within cities. all of it fell into serious decline in the 1960s.

@futurebird I've actually done an informal experiment re this with other people before. I don't have my phone in my room when I'm working with clients, but they usually do, because it's in their bag or pocket or whatever. When this topic comes up ("are we being spied on" -- which really is "are we being hyper-targeted with ads") which it sometimes does, we'll pick a subject that we wouldn't normally talk about when we are in session and then chat about it for a few minutes. Lo and behold, everybody that I've ever tried this with reports back that at the minute they pick their phone up, guess what shows up? Ads etc. for whatever we were talking about. 😖

I told one of my friends Ash's full name the other day and it was wild to watch her gendered expectations come out. "But, Ashley is a GIRL'S name?!" she squeaked. He is Ashley James LongTail. Ashley J. AJ. Ash. Ashy Slashy (even though he's a sweetheart and has never once clawed me). It wasn't somebody to whom I could explain he was named after "Ashley Joanna Williams" from The Evil Dead because I adore Bruce Campbell, and "James Tiptree Jr", one of Alice Sheldon's pen names, because same.Sometimes I feel very, VERY lonely in this world.
