@matrix you're not supposed to. That's all of etymological interest after "tenderness", the part you're supposed to remember. Just like when faced some random medical word that you don't recognize, you can intuit the meaning from remembering bits of Latin, you can get a sense of an unknown character, but that's not what you're supposed to do. What you're supposed to do is recognize the character.

@matrix kanji's worse massively overloading the characters, but if you're just reading you don't need the pronunciation at all. "A sense of what the character refers to" is enough for you to gloss over it and still get something out of the text. The spell that was just cast must be some kind of ice thing because it's covered in ice radicals, idk

@matrix the important point is that there isn't an alternative path (and definitely not a shortcut) that goes through you first learning all of these detailed etymological breakdowns of character meanings.

@Soy_Magnus @verita84 @Terry are cops in the US also not law enforcement officers? With the longer training they're probably worse because the training itself is bad. The essential difference here is just that any time the Democrats rile up a mob to attack the cops, the same people are safely pulling the cops back, but with ICE there's real opposition. In a tense situation you act how you planned to act. No cop is planning to shoot bad guys in the leg. Cops do shit like>knock on door at midnight>guy answers door with a gun pointing safely at the ground>tell guy to drop the weapon>guy immediately starts to comply, lowering the weapon without ever redirecting it away from the ground>both cops open fire and kill the guy.cops are trained to be so protective of their own lives that it becomes cowardice. Shameful, culpable cowardice, the kind of rank-breaking that gets your entire unit killed, as training. At the same time ICE are certainly preparing to kill protesters and are certainly more likely to do so when it's not necessary, and the smug patriotic swagger is part of why. The repulsiveness and cynical not-touching-you bullshit of the protesters is also why. To permit this situation to continue is only explained as cynical political calculation to benefit from these inevitable outcomes.

@Soy_Magnus @Terry @verita84 yeah, that's retarded, but it also isn't the problem. With more training they'd get more hesitation-reducing training, with shooting range targets of women holding a baby in one hand and a gun in the other hand. With more training they'd get more IDF instructors. The danger of untrained goons is the opposite danger, of an ICE agent getting shot with his own gun after it's taken from him.The problems are: the prompted action of the ICE, the prompted action of the protesters, and that that the federal power that should see this obviously bad situation and put a stop to it instead thinking "[my party] can probably seize the midterms if things keep on like this!"

@prettygood the TRVE DEFIANCE option is to exhaustively prepare yourself to seek the actually just outcome regardless of any pressure from the judge, lawyers, and especially the rest of any jury that you're put on. If it's all black people who physically menace you and shout at you for not wanting to just hand an evil company's money over to a completely undeserving party, then you stand on principle and hang the jury. If the facts are entirely on the prosecution's side but the case is bullshit, you stand on principle and argue against a guilty verdict. You do not take an easy way out that gets you kicked off the jury, you actually engage your social skills (or tactical dumb stubbornness if those fail you) and do not under any threats make a decision that you yourself oppose. If some asshole wants you to vote a certain way, he needs to actually persuade you to that position.Odds are that you don't get put on a jury anyway, and maybe the parties are all so repulsive that you don't even care about the case, but there's value in bracing yourself. It is again the only truly defiant option.

that reddit mod's core, most heartfelt complaint, you can find in Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich.Ivan is a magistrate who coldly and professionally handles others, remaining detached and ignoring emotional appeals, citing the law as a reply to direct questions like "what do I have to do?". Thinking about what you have to do is *YOUR* job. *MY* job is only to tell you what you must base your decisions on.And then, Ivan's sitting in a doctor's office, asking the doctor if he's going to live, and the doctor is only giving him only these detached, professional, emotionless answers. But Ivan was also self-aware. It was his own mind going back to his behavior as a magistrate, after reflecting on his frustration with the doctor. It wasn't only Tolstoy exposing Ivan to the reader. The reddit mod is wholly unaware, nearly rolling his eyes while mentioning a complaint about his deleting comments that called his scam a scam. Everyone who watches his video notes that reddit's "coc team" team treated him the exact same way that way he treated others, but he does not notice this, he only pathetically whines that he wasn't given a second chance, not talked to first, not allowed to argue his defense, not given clear reasons for his dismissal. His unstated complaint is "how can you treat me so coldly after I've invested so much in this community? I'm not some riff-raff just come in the door!" A universal cry of the soul of anyone in his position. But he doesn't state directly it because he's a redditor and he doesn't like the inequality that it implies.

@Chzikken_1486 it's extremely suspect to carry that gun around at all. It's a danger to everyone around the wielder, it has THE worst defect that any gun could possibly have, even worse than just exploding in the hand.A reason to carry it into an ICE protest is to 'accidentally' on purpose shoot an ICE agent with it, while hoping to dodge charges. It's only right if he died by his own scheming.

@CSB @admin @csb you have a service in a docker container and the service crashes. What happens next?kubernetes comes with a bunch of architecture that comes with reasonable answers to this question and others. Without it, your site'll still work. You can even answer the question with your own code. If your site is not particularly downtime-sensitive you can defer answering the question until after you realize that your site has been broken for a few days.

@CSB @admin @csb for testing your own code on your own machine even the docker might be overkill (much less if you have 10k dependencies - a container protects you from supply-chain malware).
