No idea why @WebKitGTK in one of my computers keeps rendering GitLab's font with terrible kerning, while on my other box it's just perfect. Both HiDPI with 2x scaling, both same distribution and software versions... Most likely it will end up being some #FontConfig shenanigans and that's why I don't really feel like investigating it. Any issue having to do with FontConfig is always a headache.

Have you gotten the new Firefox already? Not sure if this is GNOME Shell, GPU drivers, or Firefox itself to blame. The same version works fine on another computers that has a different GPU and runs the Labwc compositor (wlroots based).

@xerz one could argue that a modern display controller has more raw processing power than a Z80 or a 6502 running at a few megahertz, tho :blobpeek:

@xerz get Wikipedia and a few other sources agree it is image/gif, including the source code for mainstream browser engines. Are you sure it does not hard a MIME type?

Well, I just saw a Macintosh IIfx with the matching “high resolution” Apple monitor for 200€ in a local second hand market website and I'm lamenting not having some proper space at home for retro hardware, because that is a good price if the machine is in reasonable condition as the pictures seem to indicate :blobpeek:

Second hand #Amiga 1200 for #retrocomputing shenanigans “sold untested” for a bit over hundred euros, yay or nay? How reasonable is it to expect it may actually just work, or that it would be relatively easy to fix? Asking for a friend.#m68k #askfedi

@janbeta @reidrac yeah, I'm counting on needing to do some recapping and good cleaning. And I'm okay having a small project for the late night hours, an hour or two now and then before hitting the sack. Prices for an already refurbished A1200 are five or six times higher so it may be actually fun to get a cheap who-knows-whether-it-works bargain unit.

@craftyguy @janbeta @reidrac the only way is being able to have a place where to leave things paused in whatever state they happen to be, and learn to live with incomplete, work-in-progress projects. In my case the tricky part is thr first, but I might be able to broker some space after spring^W autumn cleaning—we still have stuff misplaced from our last move almost two years ago, and I know there is room, just not available right now, and a cleanup is approaching.

@diegoe I've been very happy with the non-nonsense of https://njal.la — it may not be the cheapest option, but on the other hand prices have stayed the same for years, the service has been reliable without noticeable downtimes, and the website is not annoying to use (which is very positive on this day and age).Their blog ia pure gold: https://njal.la/blog/ and they are on fedi, too: @njalla

Maybe I should pick my #Vaio TZ11MN and have the latest #Haiku beta installed on its spinning rust drive. It has already some old install, but from years back, seems worth a shot to try again after @ActionRetro's video the other day :thonking:

@ActionRetro by the way, I still insist that the TZ11 was the prettiest laptop I've ever had, and one of the best designs overall. It is lighter and thinner than anything available at the time (1.1kg only!) while still having a DVD reader + CD burner combo, actual Ethernet and VGA ports, and a relatively narrow screen bezel. While it didn't have the strongest CPUs, the amounts of memory were okay and the SSD option was prohibitive, in exchange it did give me 11h of battery runtime *on Linux*.

There is a design detail in the TZ11 that I wish other manufacturers would follow (including Sony themselves in later models): most of the ports are on the left side, so if you put a mouse on the right side it can be used without bumping into cables or USB dongles. The only port on the right side is the VGA one, and it's placed towards the back so it doesn't annoy much either. The only other thing on the right is the DVD/CD unit tray, which is not used that often.

This is a laptop from 2007, by the way. That's sixteen years ago. Laptop design has not improved since. If something, it has gotten boring with everybody trying to copy Apple. Not the worst thing to copy in some regards, but not the best either.

@reidrac maybe https://sourcehut.org or https://codeberg.org — moving back to GH would be equally bad IMO. And yes, GitLab is the kitchen sink and more, every update has something annoying and useless for the 97% of the people out there.

@thomholwerda I have an account that I use basically once a year and FWIW it has indeed devolved into a tyre fire of UX in the last five-ish years. It doesn't stop burning down, it keeps slowly getting worse as time goes by. And this is coming from someone who has worked in IT since 2007, and has been poking at the Internet since ~1997 🙄

For the #Amiga folks who use #Arch Linux, I have just packaged the venerable AGReader, so one can preview Amiga Guide files without booting up your favorite #retrocomputing hardware or an emulator. The package is in the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/agreader

@csepp I've found @WPEWebKit to perform better when built with “-Os” in some old-ish ARM boards where instruction cache is not particularly big and/or bandwidth to system memory is below average. It wouldn't be surprising if it goes similarly with Firefox. Also big browsers are mostly C++ and include their own portability layers, meaning they don't use that much from libc, so a leaner libc may actually be beneficial. The libc idea I haven't checked myself, tho.
