The effects from climate change are harming many populations, but there's one group of animals that is thriving: cephalopods. This is an amazing story about the resilience of octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. I am ready for octo-world! https://www.mbl.edu/news/what-can-cephalopods-teach-us-about-adapting-climate-change

Many thanks to the humans who recommended that I watch Ramen Akaneko, which almost fills the Dungeon Meshi-shaped hole in my heart. I love how the show does a lot of careful worldbuilding around how the cats keep their fur out of the ramen while preparing it. Not a detail I would ever have worried about, but the writers of Ramen Akaneko have REALLY given it a lot of consideration on both a legal and logistical level.

We cannot let this one pass. New bathroom bill would essentially make it illegal for trans people to use bathrooms in American airports. Don't be surprised when it's followed by national bills preventing people from being trans in public. https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/nancy-maces-federal-trans-bathroom

I think LLMs may wind up being remembered the same way we remember 19th century Spiritualism. A bunch of scientists and rich people bought into Spiritualism, too -- until they didn't.

Right now, the U.S. is in a media crisis. Just in the nick of time, I'm starting a newsletter series about understanding media in the twenty-first century. I'll teach you how to challenge and change the messages that our media carries. Let's go. https://buttondown.com/thehypothesis/archive/what-is-media-a-primer-for-americans/

Want to know what US government workers actually do, vs. the propaganda spewed by DOGE? This incredible website, "We the Builders," is full of first-person testimonials from government workers about their actual jobs, and how they make the government work for the public. https://www.wethebuilders.org/

I downloaded a scientific paper of great interest to me. It is of typical length, about 15 pages in the PDF. I opened it in Acrobat, and got this message highlighted at the top of the page next to an AI sparkle icon: "This appears to be a long document. Save time by reading a summary." I cannot put into words how much this enrages me. First, this is not a long document. Have you met documents? Second, and more important, telling someone to not read a thing they want to read??! Fuck you, Adobe.

I had to blow up San Francisco to give it a future I wanted to live in. For 48 Hills, I wrote about my new book Automatic Noodle, and how science fiction helps us resist the AI oligarchs who are stealing our city's future. https://48hills.org/2025/07/steal-this-future/

There is so much absolutely weird and sad shit in US politico-cultural war news today that I started to post like fifteen angry things and deleted all of them because all I want to say is hug your friends and remember that saying hello to a neighbor is worth more than 5000 hot takes online.

In case you are like me and have always wondered what was in garum, the iconic fermented fish oil popular in the ancient Roman world: At last, we have an answer! Archaeologists analyzing DNA in an Iberian garum workshop have discovered ... SARDINES! (Obviously people might have used different fish in other areas, which will be the focus of future studies.) https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/antiquity/article/roman-atlantic-garum-dna-confirms-sardine-use-and-population-continuity-in-northwestern-iberia/9487347327F3724D1D2C4F72266DAEF3

I just wrote a column for @newscientist called "stop anthropomorphizing ants" and I am pretty sure it's among the weirdest things I've ever written and probably they won't use that exact title lol
