There is a pretty incredible and unusual exhibit up at the Center for the Book and also the San Francisco Public Library's main branch. It's about the Bay Area movement in copy machine art that arose in the 1970s up through zines. It's such a cool and unusual cut back through history—Chicano, feminist, technological, artistic. It's called Positively Charged

The tie in with the zine world of the 90s and 00s that I knew and loved is pretty obvious. One fun connection: Rene Yañez, who worked with/around the Galeria de la Raza, has work in the show... AND his son Rio Yañez has a zine in the show, too. And it is hilarious. Raza si! Dr. Doom, no!

The more I think about what went wrong with web search, it comes down to this: the internet companies did not ever come up with a workable definition of truth, or fealty to reality, or anything like it. What are the markers of fact in some text? They never figured that out. You cannot organize all the world’s information without that core concept. The chatbots are just making this failure plain (and weird).

Of course, figuring out if something is true—which we’ll call a good representation of reality—is really hard! It’s what huge swaths of journalism and the humanities try to do, with halting and provisional success. But Google, et al, fled the battle. And it’s going to continue to have brutal consequences.

@md @gbhnews mmmmm I’m not crazy about the idea of journalists sequestering ourselves in our own instances. I like being out there with people
