So I'm a #ruby developer and I live in #vermont . I made an account on http://ruby.social and I like its local feed. But I also like the local feed at https://vermont.masto.host/ -- but I don't want to migrate my main account there.* Should I create a new account on the Vermont server and swap between them?* If I enable Advanced Search can I make one of my columns display the local feed from a different instance?@james@ruby.host @brendanas admins do you have opinions / advice / preferences?#Mastodon

@james #Mastodon fyi I'm getting rate limited a lot (meaning "often" and "many times in a row"). I'm afraid that's at least partly because while reading feeds I'm also opening tabs -- ostensibly to check out individual users or toots, but because I selected "Advanced View" each page is making a full client with lots of background requests. l'm going to select "Slow Mode" for now. Is there anything else I should do to limit the strain I'm putting on your plucky little server?

@mark @james aha, thanks! i’m still learning what these mastodon terms all mean — maybe i should figure it out and make a Mastodon PR to add a note explaining “Limited” vs “Suspended” on the About page (and definitely don’t take my word for it about the drama subsiding — i’m nowhere near the loop on that)

I'm not worried about the AI apocalypse. I'm worried about the "VCs subsidize AI tech and sell it at a loss just long enough to make everyone rely on them (aka 'disrupting the knowledge worker industry') before bumping the price up and quality down just like Uber and Amazon and the rest" apocalypse. #ai #vc

@jaz“"Users" dehumanises, alienates, and allows for a particular brand of technospeak that smacks of addicted eyeballs and lost privacy.”Who experiences these connotations for this word? Do they always smack of hype or just in certain contexts? Do you have an alternative term that embraces all-and-only the same people without anyone feeling dehumanized or alienated or patronized? Those are rhetorical questions but my point is: please try not to language-scold, esp. in the passive voice.

@simon i was a little confused by all the meta-layers in that screenshot but your Playground version of it made it clear: the “user” text contains the word “system” which tricks the system into modifying its hidden “system” rules — essentially you are discovering there is no way to “sanitize” input strings if these apps are just concatenating all the input tokens into one big flat token-string to send to the LLM for “execution”🤔

@rolle @oliphant Very pretty! It’s certainly at least as good as most of the (released) Synthwave tracks I’ve heard. Thanks for the treat!

@itisiboller @ShaulaEvans “Commander Vimes didn't like the phrase 'The innocent have nothing to fear', believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like 'The innocent have nothing to fear'.”Terry Pratchett, Snuff (a Discworld novel)

@stuxit’s not working for meI can’t see any posts from any of the above accounts using either Ivory or Tootthe first two links (geddit and news) oddly open up a mobile web browser where I can see that there are many posts, but from Mastodon proper (inside my mobile apps and from inside my home masto instance’s web interface) I can allegedly follow but still see no posts — not sure if this is deliberate or glitchy or whateg meow claims 12 posts but none appear in its list of posts

@grammargirl This looks like a different issue, but a few weeks ago, my Chrome browser started putting up semi-transparent live transcript subtitle windows above every video; they stay on top even when I switch apps to e.g. a fullscreen video game; they don’t contain any branding for Chrome (or whatever misbegotten anonymous plugin); there’s a close button that works but no obvious way to reopen it if I switch back, and an useless button whose tooltip says something about pinning. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@grammargirl found it -- it's called "Live Caption" and lots of people are as confused by it as I was -- no idea why it's enabled by default, or how Chrome decides which videos are "in English" or otherwise worth captioning, or what that dysfunctional pin button is meant to do...Settings > Accessibility > Live Captionsorry for hijacking your thread with my personal tech support monologue 😂

@aral @spacehobo do you mean plutocracy?capitalism (an economic system of dividing and trading ownership of companies) and plutocracy (rule by the rich) are not identical concepts, though lately the terms have conflated, i get thatplutocracy sucks, but capitalism and democracy cohabitate fine as long as the capitalists are well regulated by the democrats, which they’re totally fucking not these dayspower’s a problem with all isms and cracys

reminder: the Luddites were not anti-*technology*. They were anti-*factory owners firing weavers and replacing them with lower-paid loom workers*. They could have retrained the weavers and kept their pay high, but bosses gonna boss. We are all Luddites today. The name later became a slur because the bosses won, and used propaganda to hide the history, and because smashing looms is a dramatic symbol, and humans like retelling dramatic stories, not depressing facts.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddite
