Palestinian children do not deserve to die because Hamas exists. Israeli children do not deserve to die because of right-wing politicians in the government. Collective punishment is a violation of the Geneva Conventions. Do not fall into the trap of dehumanising people. "But terrorists" has been the source of human rights violations for decades now. Don't be a sucker. Murdering someone else's child will not bring the victims back.

@tante @jakob @esther Some people who know their topic at a deep level still get nervous, are tired, are jet lagged, etc. Some people can read a script in an engaging way. “Works on my machine” is an anti-pattern for advice about how to use our brains, too.

After enough practice, opposing abusive people becomes second nature. A beaver seeing water flow where it shouldn’t thinks “Absolutely NOT, oh hell no, let me get a stick” and gets on with it. Be like that when you see someone who should not be at an event. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

An abuser who is ready for rehabilitation won’t show up to events where his victims will be present. Jacob Appelbaum has not sought forgiveness from his victims. He has sought forgiveness from people who are not his victims and have no business granting him anything. He has made no amends, has paid no therapy bills, and most importantly,has not fucked off. Abusers who show up to events uninvited ARE DANGEROUS. Tolerance of abuse isn’t rehab.

I don’t see any possibility that he will genuinely change. He needs to be held accountable through communities protecting themselves by banishing him, legally,or by the fear that one of these days he will attack someone with the skills to seriously injure him in the process of asserting their completely legal right to self-defense. If for some reason you give a damn about this terrible asshole, get him to accept option one.

@eaon @fl0_id @schrotthaufen @vaurora @tante Failure to have a code of conduct and enforcement is a hierarchy. It puts rapists in charge of the event. Funny that the argument against masks for COVID at CCC events was that masks supposedly give immunosuppressed people a false sense of security, something blatantly false. Yet event policies full of holes are just fine.

@mjg59 if they actually banned him and the other rapists he runs around with, they would have no shortage of bouncers. As a bonus, these people are competent programmers and digital security trainers who belong at CCC events.
