@dwildstr @benni @futurebird Just curious: Are the dozenalists mostly mathematicians? Is there something else behind it, such as support for imperial units?

@futurebird I remember, in the late '80s and early '90s, the panic that sampled and MIDI audio would put musicians out of business. Or music videos and interactive CDROMs would make audio-only music a thing of the past.

@futurebird Ah, WordPress. It's a free open source tool that's perfect for a vanilla blog or a static website. What's that? You want managed hosting and your own domain name? You'll need yo pay for that. You want that specific theme? You'll need to pay for it.You want to sell stuff? Yeah, WooCommerce is extra. No, it won't sell your event/subscription/memberships/etc out of the box. That's an extra plugin. And you want polls? A newsletter? A metered paywall? A forum? There's plugins for those. Some you'll need to pay for, others you'll need to pay extra to do what you want. And you'll also need to buy some plugins for your plugins.Oh, and not all the plugins play nice, so you'll need to buy different ones. You want those plugins to work together? Buy this integration plugin. You want to integrate with something outside WordPress? That can be arranged for a free. You need to scale up? Now you need to pay extra. Not just for hosting—gor plugins. Now the fun begins. There's a strange error message and your site isn't behaving. You just need to find which of your plugins is causing it and find the right setting to fix it.Yeah, you can get WordPress to do anything you need. As long as you clear out your wallet each month.

@futurebird For the benefit of your friends down under: Am I correct in assuming saltines/soda crackers and Salads biscuits are the same thing? https://www.arnotts.com/brands/salada

@futurebird So out of curiosity I went down a Salada-related rabbit hole and found this: https://australianfoodtimeline.com.au/salada-biscuits/Apparently Saladas were originally made by Brockoff's biscuits in Burwood, and were mostly a Victorian thing. (Brockoff's was taken over by Arnott's in the 1960s. Melburnians weren't pleased when they began making them in Sydney, because the texture was wrong.)Anyways, there's a photo of them below. Dry, flaky, square with perforations, coarse salt. They seem to be the same thing?

@futurebird It was not about eggs in cartons. It was never about selling eggs in cartons. Many countries, including Australia, have always tended to sell eggs in cardboard containers rather than styrofoam, without issue.Like so many other petrochemical products, the issue was the fossil fuel industry's profits. As for who the real elites are, ExxonMobil's profits are around US$9.2 billion per quarter: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/exxon-delivers-92-billion-second-quarter-profit-raises-output-target-2024-08-02/The environmental activists criticising the fossil fuel industry overwhelmingly earn most of their income from wages, rather than from owning land or capital. Most are in the bottom 90%.It really is audacious for a corporation that delivers multi-billion-dollar profits to its intergenerationally wealthy capital-owning shareholders every quarter to fund lobbying who claim workers are supposedly the "elites".Big oil gets away with it because class consciousness is at an all-time low.I think it's time to start changing that.

@cwebber Reading through this executive order, it's clear that Elon and Don either:a) Do not intend for a Democrat to even hold the presidency again, or at the very leastb) Have executed this power grab without considering the possibility of a Democrat in the White House in the future.I say this, because can you seriously imagine that the Republicans would've been happy with an EO giving this much power to Obama or Biden?

Here's a very fundamental question about #AUKUS: https://nickcohen.substack.com/p/trumps-true-enemy-isnt-china-or-russia #auspol"Does anyone seriously believe that an America that won’t defend Ukraine will go to war to defend Taiwan."

The whole premise of the AUKUS deal is that Australia would act as a proxy for the US and UK, should China ever invade Taiwan. To fill that role, Australia needed long-range submarines. Which would be purchased at Australia's expense. But the Trump Administration has so far shown it will side with authoritarian regimes and parties over liberal democratic governments. Most notably, in Ukraine and in tariff policy. It raises the fundamental question: Would the US come to the aid of Taiwan if it were invaded by an authoritarian state (like China)? If the answer is no, then fundamentally AUKUS is dead in the water.

@LanguageMan1 If the US doesn't intend to come to the aid of Taiwan or honour its commitments to Australia, then that really calls into question the A$368 billion AUKUS deal.

@futurebird I mean, the Fediverse already has Lemmy, KBin, and MBin.So there's already an ecosystem of pre-built communities out there. All you would need is better native support in Mastodon (so basically every Mastodon instance is also a Lemmy or KBin instance), with better integration in the UI...

@sebastian @futurebird I'm wondering if Mastodon groups is something @Gargron would be willing to consider? And I know @dansup has talked about adding groups to @pixelfed. I'm wondering if the implementation will integrate with KBin and Lemmy?

@jasperb @sebastian @futurebird @Gargron @dansup @pixelfed Interesting detail from that link: "Mastodon has been developing a built-in groups feature for some time now, but it hasn’t been released yet. From the screenshots posted so far, it seems it will be more of a Facebook Groups type forum rather than a public discussion list. (You can see highly technical details and screenshots of this upcoming Groups feature on their github page https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/19059 )"However, it is unclear if Mastodon groups will work across the Fediverse or only on Mastodon. Guppe is platform-neutral, and will work on any kind of Fediverse server that supports microblogging including Mastodon, Friendica and others."https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/Lots of activity on the Github page around 2022 by @ClearlyClaire but not much since? Also, there's a video on how it'll work, and this note: "This PR is not intended to be merged outside of purely development environments until it's finished. While it has reached a pretty stable state, groups are a complicated topic, and the database model, API and protocol design may change before the PR gets merged, with no clear migration path between versions of this PR."

@timnitGebru First, a huge personal thanks for raising the red flags on LLMs and the creepy TESCREAL ideology they're based on, long before most people realised it was an issue.I know there's been a big professional and personal cost to that. People are listening, we really appreciate your work and advocacy.Second, the LLM wave has to be one of the greatest misallocations of resources in human history. We're in the middle of a climate crisis. There's massive housing shortfalls in many developed countries. Huge investments are needed into health, education, and public transport. And there are far more critical things we could be researching that would unlock far more benefit to the public.Heck, given the growing issue of disinformation, there'd arguably be far more public benefit from using these resources to make news journalism from reputable outlets free.I don't see how investing billions into chasing a few billionaires' TESCREAL fantasies is the best use of our resources at this time.
