Unpopular opinion: One should never call themselves an expat. Sure, it used to have a specific meaning, but nowadays, its meaning is just "privileged (white) immigrant".Ever since I moved to Berlin, I made a point to call myself an immigrant, and it was surprising how many low-key racists got confused by that, as they preferred to call white immigrants expats to differentiate that from "the bad ones".Note, you're not bad for calling yourself an expat, but it's worth a reevaluation.

@icedquinn @dsfgs The original meaning was that an expat was there only temporary IIRC. The thing is, in modern usage it's mostly used by low-key bigots to distinguish the immigrants they like from the ones they don't.

@trwnh Not that spicy, the only people who think full decentralisation is desirable (or even possible) are libertarians, who think that the very idea of a community working together is already "zomg communism!!!"

@SuperDicq Disclaimer, I'm originally from Amsterdam, and Dutch progressiveness is just as much a lie as German efficiency.

@SuperDicq I honestly think even then, it was less progressiveness, and more practicality, coupled with less dogmatic views on some things. Paars established a lot of the Dutch progressive crown jewels, and most of those were put into place because it was practical, profitable, and there wasn't huge dogmatic resistance to it.Those policies were great however, and the Dutch definitely have gotten more conservative since.

@stux 2020 was worse, mainly because we got more used to the crap in 2021, also we got vaccines, and a glimmer of hope. 2020 just felt like we were all trapped.Of course, this also very much depends on where you live of course. The thing that WAS worse in 2021, was the anti-vaxxers/anti-maskers getting more aggressive and in-your-face.

@queerterpreter Citable, no, but the alt-right playbook on YouTube goes into it quite a bit, I don't know if he put citations in the descriptions, but you could ask him, as he's quite friendly and has given lectures on the topic as well.

Anti-abortion legislation isn't just anti-woman (but oh boy is it anti-woman), it's also anti-child.Nobody wants an abortion, but when someone has one, they do it because they feel like they are not able to care for a child. With abortion being illegal, people will be forced to have a child that they didn't want... So this means more children having bitter parents, or living in poverty, or living with whatever other conditions that would lead someone to want an abortion.

Not everyone is cut out to be a parent at the time they get pregnant, and it should be up to them to decide if they are. For their own welfare, and for the welfare of the child.Of course, most will find a way to get an abortion anyway, it will just be illegal and a lot less safe.

For some reason my street had all its cars removed and it's amazing, if not surprising, how much nicer it is. I wish it was permanent.

@shellkr @ottaross I'd even say liberalism is right, but not extremely so.

@shellkr @ottaross The thing is that I'd consider the social part its own axis, while the economic part is usually what we'd call left or right. And if you look at the liberal parties in many European countries, and even the states, they're pretty right wing. That said, I think it's a problem that we talk about politics in only a single axis instead of at least two, the other one being authoritarian vs anti-authoritarian.
