@thelinuxcast how does it compare to the vertical thumb trackballs like the ones from Logitech and Kingston?

@dcc well yeah but is there a reason to prefer that over thumb trackball or what?

Read a depressing observation about the practice of associating gay liberation with NATO/western imperialism generally: it lets non-Western right-wing governments sell repression of gay rights domestically as anti-imperialism, while in the west that same repression is sold to liberals as evidence those countries deserve what happens to them, neutralizing opposition. Meanwhile gay people in non-western countries get the twin joys of state repression and NATO bombs.

In public discourse it's all well and good to push back against narratives that devolve #climatechange responsibility to individual choice, but in your own quiet room you are seriously lying to yourself if you think climate change mitigation will succeed without you personally making large changes to how you live. For example, taking a single cross-country flight emits more carbon than citizens of some countries do in an entire year. Not eating meat saves a multiple of that.

mitigating factors here include the fact that north american non-air non-car long-distance travel infrastructure is close to nonexistent. these changes are made much easier given appropriate infrastructure investment and it's worth fighting for that.

Being born in the 90s and growing up in the alleged end of history, the messaging always being this was a period of peace and prosperity without end; contrasted with the hardening realization that a world taking climate change seriously can only be reached by living through periods of immense strife and uncertainty rivaling some of the worst parts of the 20th century. It's just the hand our generation has been dealt. It is what it is. We need to do this. #climatechange

Trying to figure out whether I'm an anomaly here. For those of you in your mid 30s or younger, how many people do you know your age or younger who have died? Friends, acquaintances, siblings, cousins, etc.

Here in the US it's a common belief that technology will save us from #climatechange. What's usually meant by this is a deus ex machina in the form of bazinga-brained tech like fusion/vat-grown meat/direct-air carbon capture. I contend technology has *already* saved us from climate change. We have all the technology we could ever need to solve this crisis. Ship, rail, solar, wind, biofuels, etc. We just aren't building it. It isn't a technological problem.

My understanding of :guix: and :nixos: are that they explicitly pin the versions of absolutely everything & their transitive dependency graphs, all the way down to the compiler versions used to build a specific software commit. But how do they handle bootstrapping compilers?#nix #guix

@kirschwipfel actually I just learned Stallman is still involved in GNU, I thought he got kicked out. So don't think I'll be checking out guix.Edit: Although @civodul did sign the letter asking Stallman to step down. So idk
