@Moon @dcc @Maholmire @pwm @dushman @nerdeiro @p @BrodieOnLinux @mima @SrEstegosaurio kuhn book is not really. plenty of people at any time giving serious thought to diverse, and "paradigm shift" is illusion. still favourite revealing this is goldsmith and laks. "institutional legitimacy backing" is a thing, though, and worse now than it used to be since academia got business-ified. involving money and "investors" and such is what constrains people to being unimaginative and short-sightedfor microkernels though, was told before issue is of message passing performance? does something happen that?guess you could hybrid approach maybe though but. like ocaml. ml is being used for "serious industry" now, and much is thanks to it has practical outs for imperative when that's more efficient

@Moon @dcc @Maholmire @pwm @dushman @nerdeiro @p @BrodieOnLinux @mima @SrEstegosaurio if you could call anything "paradigm shift" it would be something like dumping "classical" and back to constructivism in maths. but instead constructive methods have been getting steady work in parallel since the 60s (actually never really stopped. just took a few decades to reclaim ground from "foundations" into "practical" again)and this pattern holds whatever "revolution" you look at "cognitive vs. behaviourism" etc. even physics, einstein didn't kill modified newtonian dynamics, and copenhagen never had the totalising power it claimed (or even internal consistency among its supporters). what actually happens in practice is that kids like chomsky "come up with" an idea that people in his field have been talking about for 100 and some years, paint "adversaries" together as all believing something they don't, and declare themselves to have enacted a revolution (for the camera, through which the general public is misinformed

@Moon @dcc @Maholmire @pwm @dushman @nerdeiro @p @BrodieOnLinux @mima @SrEstegosaurio on an individual level people definitely are difficult to budge and the "changes one-death-at-a-time" is kinda true. and if you average over everyone can usually get to a "consensus view" sort of deal too. there's always pretty strong diversity of opinion, though. like a team of people working on alternative storage mechanisms for memory (like those experiments with rna) even while textbooks are saying neural-architecture-only-obviously. and then what any one researcher thinks will generally differ from "the consensus" somewhere or will have entertained and worked on some alternativesreally the hegemonising comes from outside forces (like money or censorship

@phnt @arcana @p @sun us schooling has no consistency in that regard. school for me never had any discussion of us at all, or any history more recent than around 500CEand other places in the us are teaching that humans rode around on dinosaurs and chattel slaves were "treated well and happy" etc

@sun @p @stux former situation is more like- "〇〇 are demons! child-abusers! murderous satan-spawn no pity" said about specific non-public-figures-and-institutions- 1~2 days later the specified target gets a flood of bomb threats, shouty picketers and something or other violent act- speaker sees this result, is pleased, and then does it again with another targetlike where target is a little hospital or one person working at a ymca somewhere. not a president

@sun @maijing @RustyCrab @apropos it was definitely the weakest of the cases against him, so absurd it ends up conviction when all the others are dismissed. just legal commentary have seen on, though. "this would not be possible in federal or anywhere else outside new york, but it is a new york thing that happens", and giving other examples

@sun @RustyCrab @apropos @maijing any rate kinda don't feel caring this stuff any more. all law is just judges and justices saying what they want and finding reasons to support it post-hoc

@sun @arcana @apropos @hj オカマ is specifically old trans pejorative. basically means "hon", but coming from outside don't-get-it people who do the gay = trans thing dumb straights started doing in 1920s (which then produced all the gay men trying to be muscly-manly to self-distance男の娘 is more recent basically equivalent of "trap", umbrella for online youngers that includes together awkwardly the fetish straight boys, gay drag, younger trans, and whatever between those

@sun @arcana @apropos @hj yeh, that's what i mean. they see older trans "mama"s or whatever, make pejorative name for that, and then use it like "oh, you're gay? that means you're trans, which further means you're bad and gross

@sun @apropos @arcana @hj "invert" is similar word in english world, though starting from clinical jargon rather than slang. word for trans -> brainwashed modern straights never learned about how humans work the way their ancestors did (because hierarchical system benefits from their ignorance) -> gay = trans = bad

@sun @p ah unanyhow think trouble here is in translation, yeh. jp now does have explicit Xジェンダー (i got one friend like that and met others), but also makes easy to intentionally avoid any gendering at all, which can be done for many reasons, like a story hides to the end narrator talking about "woman i love" is also woman is a kinda thing happens. en speakers got too trapped in "must be explicitly something" though doesn't even have a good way to discuss that possibility

@p @lucy here's c treating the type system as a safety mechanism https://open-std.org/JTC1/SC22/WG14/www/docs/n3042.htmi love c, and c11 and c23 have been for the most part helpful little pushes towards cleaning things up, but a complete reboot would be so much better. make a new lang that can even keep the same machine-level representation, and just clean up syntax, so you don't have "const" scattered around meaning multiple things and type signatures are rearranged to not make funpointers suck etc; add basic type inference system, with an off switch for when you want to do bit padding kinda stuff; and clean up stdlib to be like other modern langs, with naming conventions and modularisation consistent and predictable and no more "gets DEPRECATED DO NOT USE" kinda stuff floating around

@sun @dcc @j @p @lanodan @hj limitation is feedforward design. brains have feedback from "higher layers" (really a spoke-hub-y web with many inputs), so something like part of your visual system that sees abstract objects talking back to the edge detectors and telling them what to see kinda architecturehttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4345765/without these many-layered loops you have to try lut-ing, meaning extreme bloat and little perturbations on the low level being able to disrupt the abstract high level too easily
