@todayilearned That's fewer than 2 per state. Fewer than the amount of senators. How... quaint.

@duponin Hybrid. Keep a record of the users but outsource authentication.

@duponin Correct. Unfortunately. But spinning your own comes with risk down the road.

@NedMan @EdS That was my first impression too. This photo lacks the laboratory conditions I would expect from early house-sized computers. Dust and bugs would prevent the computer from running efficiently.

@strypey Oh dear. Forcing people online to prove their identities is going to prove a very bad time for a LOT of people who use chosen names for a LOT of very good, life-saving reasons. Let's talk about the ethics of that, first, before we start talking about what tech to use to get people killed.

@strypey And who's going to make it so that use of that tech continues to be limited to governments? Once it exists, for-profit companies and surveillance groups will want to use it. Who's going to stop them? Our good intentions? Or hope? Or faith?

@todayilearned Next time anybody wonders why you HAVE to consider the WORST possible ABUSE of your otherwise benign system, consider this.

A long time ago when developing a software application using the MS VBA programming language, used to automate MS Office applications each of which seemed mostly a black box full of wizardry, I noticed one of the procedures failed to have the desired effect. Why the procedure failed we never figured out, but we fixed it by duplicating its final instruction. Yes: just do that twice, for good measure. "Return even harder," as @puniko puts it.

25 Years ago I majored in Political Science and Comparative Culture. I never finished that study. But it did open my eyes to the pervasiveness of politics. My posts here tend to focus on developing software, securing information, making music, and my family. I strongly believe that those unaware (or ignorant) of politics and history wind up making software that hurts lots of people.

How do I make #mozilla #firefox stop updating automatically? Nothing appears to work. It insists on prompting for an admin password to update its updating mechanism every time I start it. But I don't have that as I don't own the equipment: it's my clients' equipment. How do I make it stop?

@futurebird I blame the ridiculous learning curve and hollowing out of features imposed on us by Microsoft. What say you?
