hashtags are supposed to be content and metadata at the same time and that's why they're bad UX

they don't #work as #content because they're distracting and wreck the conversational flow; they don't work as metadata because even if you pile them up at the end the reader is still expecting normal sentences with syntax, and instead they get word salad #wordsalad

tumblr sensibly moves its hashtags out of the flow entirely but the way they're displayed means that users end up writing additional commentary, little bits of concrete poetry, or even entire posts in the tags, because it's funny

@gaditb yeah from the author's point of view this is great, but from a reader's perspective it kind of dilutes their value as metadata. otoh nobody likes writing metadata so making it fun is probably a good idea

@gaditb yeah it's not like a serious problem or anything, just kind of an interesting consideration. like the tumblr design is definitely better imo; if you hypothetically wanted to design a different website that focused more on using tag-based indexing for discovery you might consider a different approach that limited expressiveness, but obviously you wouldn't be pitching that to the kind of users who enjoy tumblr

@gaditb ("definitely better" than twitter hashtags, which are rubbish)

okay i've just seen another thread talking about how everyone's using discord to store stuff and honestly we really gotta get on top of the discord issue. this is a collective action problem

telling people to "just make a website" isn't working. most people don't know how to make a website, fewer know how to make a good one, and nobody wants to run their own server aside from the people who are already doing it

maybe wikis are useful for storing the kind of knowledge that's easy to categorise, externally verifiable, and doesn't change much, but other types of information would benefit from something more like everything2

also it's of limited practical utility without store&forward, which it basically can never do because of the design

@lori at some point google realised that, since they didn't have competition, keeping their shit working was an unnecessary expense that got in the way of selling more ads

The Luddites who rail against new technologies just need to shut up and adapt honestly. Like yeah I have reservations as well but the fact is the longer you spend working with this stuff the more chance you have of surviving the changes that are coming. The Torment Nexus is just a tool like any other; what's important is who uses it. The fact is that Torment Nexus Industries has put an enormous amount of R&D into this, and the sheer scale of VC investment flowing in means these developments are inevitable anyway. Most of the critics don't even work with this technology and have no idea how nightmare extrusion works or even understand the basic principles of hyperagonisation. I'm sick of hearing about "the orphans",
