telling people to "just make a website" isn't working. most people don't know how to make a website, fewer know how to make a good one, and nobody wants to run their own server aside from the people who are already doing it

@aeonofdiscord the issue here is that there is a perfect solution, which is "just make a simple wiki on some managed service that is based on mediawiki, which is the only thing that normal people can halfway use" which would be great and all except:* fandom is a garbage fire* the biggest non-fandom alternative just had a bit of a oops no backups issue

putting stuff on a discord: a) free b) familiar c) does not make you think about information security d) directly linked to the platform you're already using for discussion. from the point of view of the content creator there are very few downsides unless discord-the-company decides to do something to inconvenience you (which so far it has not)

for the people OUTSIDE the community it generally sucks but since those people are outside the community there's very little incentive to care about them! discord is clearly the worse-is-better solution for a lot of people here

maybe wikis are useful for storing the kind of knowledge that's easy to categorise, externally verifiable, and doesn't change much, but other types of information would benefit from something more like everything2

@niplav forums are trasssh though. i really cannot overstate how bad the forum UX is, we just all got used to it because it was the style at the time
