Fell down a total rabbit hole of keepsake and artifact-based games and books the last few years, so of course I wanted this one. I'm clearly not the only fan, as it's raised $30k more in just the few days since I backed it?! If you like #NorseMythology and/or #interactiveFiction and/or #boardGames and/or a mix of all of the above, get in before it's over!https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/postcurious/threads-of-fate-a-puzzletale-the-tale-of-ord-remastered

I cannot believe all the (apparently) men coming out of the woodwork on that listserv to say, yes, it is troubling if we cannot criticize this thing. And NONE of them notice that nobody said criticism isn't allowed. And NONE of them notice that only one email in the initial chain actual presented editorial critique. The rest were just an open forum of petty jibes. And seriously, all men so far. Who are apparently incapable of seeing the (so far all) women's perspectives. This is exhausting.

Watching this whataboutist path from "criticism" to "THIS FORUM BETTER LET PEOPLE CRITICIZE" is honestly horrible and so dispiriting. Shades of Gamergate, in a way.But on the plus side, Evelyn McManis is my hero for the day. Her direct, no-bullshit email perked me right up. 🥰

"THREATS"?! What the fuck is even happening with these men? YES, your rudeness will be remembered! That is not a threat! That is a reminder of how your professional colleagues will remember you in future! W. T. F.(And you're damn right I remember every guy who's pitched a raging tantrum/bigotry fest on that list, and I keep them in mind in terms of my business.)

I hate (I. HATE.) that I am biting back every possible response to that listserv mess, because some of the people involved are or work at big names in the field. And despite all my self-promises to draw lines, I have to maintain collegial relations with these people and institutions or I might as well leave the field entirely.Which is on my mind all the time, and which some of these men (seriously, still just men) do not seem to get.

They are really going to do it. They (all men) are going to completely ignore the snarky comments of yesterday's thread and focus the conversation entirely against the people (all women) who didn't like those snarky comments.I have never disliked the rare bookish world more than right now.

I feel like I am losing my mind (or being gaslit) watching this listserv nonsense. These men (STILL ONLY MEN) clearly truly believe that the "pearl-clutching" is all on their opponents' side. And that the "thoughtful criticism" (reminder: the OP put NO CRITICISM in his first email) is actually being presented well and in a helpful way. They have turned it into an existential battle for the listserv and don't realize how many of us are fighting an existential battle to last in the field.

I honestly hope the mods do NOT respond. Not least because these men keep demanding that they affirm that they're allowed to talk about this stuff.YOU GUYS HAVE NOT STOPPED TALKING ABOUT IT AT ALL SINCE YOU STARTED. You just interpreted women's points that your commentary wasn't been done politely or in the appropriate venue as being told to shut up.It is absolutely bizarre to watch such a raging cliché of gendered communication play out in my Gmail inbox.

@CitizenWald I'm not even personally or professionally involved! I feel for the editors, but truly, I'm sorry for all of us. As one woman pointed out to the insufferables, the point isn't the criticism itself, it's all the younger/newer members watching this and learning uncomfortable lessons. I'm feeling it, and I'm not even new!

@libroraptor @CitizenWald I have to say that I really thought the profession(s) was progressing, but this apparently endless listserv debacle has made me reconsider.

I really hate seeing that article going around about the grift of planting trees as carbon offsets. Yes, the grift is real and planting trees with that intention is disingenuous. But KEEP PLANTING TREES ANYWAY. So many trees in my area have been cut down for often very little reason. We're losing shade, root structures, ecosystems.I worry that these types of headlines enforce a belief that there is only one perfect solution and nothing else is worth doing.#ClimateDiary

Just saw someone express incredulity at the idea of having to do law research decades ago without a computer, since "99.9%" of that "requires" a computer now. I'm gonna need a bit for my brain to stop screaming that it's only "required" because we built a world to center it.But also I'm a librarian who, in the face of useless search engines and AI lurking around every corner, has started re-educating myself on print resources and research strategies. It is a really strange time to be informed.

Looking forward to the new collection of anthropologist Wade Davis' essays. Reading the Kirkus Review, I was struck by this assessment:"He sees the pandemic as a critical turning point, although this idea seems less strong as the crisis recedes in the rearview mirror."The review author seems blissfully unaware of how their statement interacts with Davis' view. Why do apparently smart people think COVID can only be a critical point if it stays at exactly the same crisis intensity as 2020?

The arrival of COVID cracked my world and my worldview wide open. It was indeed a critical turning point for many things. Also, COVID is still here, and other pandemics and other crises are testing the waters. So.

@CommonMugwort I'm one of the (previously) unknowing, and wow! I've always loved pistachios, and I had no idea they were so flame-tipped on the tree. How beautiful!

Book rec request! What's a good, reputable book on foraging in the Pacific Northwest? I would prefer one that includes an introduction to foraging practice, not just a list of plants.I'm not knowledgeable enough in that world to judge on sight/name, and I know that's gotten exponentially worse in the last two years. Recommendations based on reading and using the book from a knowledgeable perspective would be great. Please boost, and thank you!#foraging #PNW #NativePlants @bookstodon

Libraries tracking borrowing history is a complicated and iffy thing (particularly in this time), but I like having the memory backup, so I started my own spreadsheet awhile ago.Like so many documents, it's a fascinating record not just of its particular purpose but of my mind and interests through time.To be less noble about it, it's not entirely unlike reading through my childhood and teenage diaries...

By the way, if you use a public library system and are unaware, many/most of the current systems used to catalog and checkout materials enable "borrowing history" for patrons. I can't say whether it's always on by default, but it's worth looking into with any library accounts you have.Libraries can have their records subpoenaed, and vendors often use cloud storage. This may not be the time to allow a system you don't control to have that record.

My husband keeps a list of "mental health webcams" (as in, live cameras at national parks, nature reserves, watching animal nests, etc.) to check when he needs a break during his workday. It's a very him thing, and I love it.But I was clued in to a couple of feeds that I've now pinned to check on, and I think I want more. So, what is your favorite scenic live webcam?Nature is good, but I'm open to built spaces, too. Non-US would be especially good.#AskFedi #webcam
