I just had a bit of a look at kbin.social and I have to say, kbin looks really impressive! If you've never heard of kbin, it's a fediverse platform specifically focusing on groups. Broadly speaking, similar to lemmy, the goal is to create a fediverse take on the reddit experience. However, kbin also integrates fediverse groups like gup.pe, chirp and friendica groups, and that is a killer feature as far as I'm concerned! We've been running a lemmy instance for a few months now, but it might be time to look at spinning up our own kbin instance too!#lemmy #kbin #fediverse #FediverseGroups #friendica #ChirpSocial #fedivangelism

I've had a few days playing around with kbin now, and I really can't say enough good things about it!It's still very early beta, but it aggregates groups from friendica, gup.pe and chirp and handles them in a smart interface. It also has dedicated reddit like groups (called magazines) that are cross compatible with lemmy. And best of all, you can set up Calckey like antenna for each magazine. This means that not only can you see content explicitly posted to the magazine, but there is a separate tab for content automatically aggregated from the wider fediverseI've already created a bunch of magazines simply because there aren't many there yet, but I look forward to handing them over to other people once the userbase grows @ernest@kbin.social, what an amazing platform you're developing! @kbinmeta@kbin.social#kbin #fediverse

For those who are unaware, lemmy and kbin to a lesser extent are in the early stages of a rapid growth in users, similar to the one Mastodon experienced in November last year.In a move similar to Twitter, Reddit has all but confirmed that 3rd party apps will be locked out with their new API pricing, effectively forcing people to use the official app or nothing. That has driven a lot of people to look for alternatives. I expect the wave in new users will ebb, but it will surge back again even larger once the 3rd party reddit apps are officially unusable. We live in interesting times on the fediverse#lemmy #kbin #reddit #fediverse #EternalNovember

@malakai@the.occultist.space As an admin, you can disable downvotes on your instance! That was one of the first things I did

@malakai@the.occultist.space So far, that is less of an issue in my experience. Of course, the culture is at the beginning of the inevitable change that comes with growth, so who knows where it will end up...However, I have hope that because it's moderated by teams on smaller instances, reply guys and the like will be less of a cultural norm

Lemmy growth is crazy!Blahaj zone (the Calckey instance) has been running for around 6 months now. We've had a slow but constant growth of new members, with a big spike when Calckey drew a lot of attention. And as a result, even though we're not a huge instance, we are one of the larger Calckey derived instances around. lemmy.blahaj.zone on the other hand has seen crazy growth! In the last week, our lemmy instance has gone from almost no members, to nearly as many users as our Calckey instance. The mind blowing part though, is that the lemmy instance isn't even close to being one of the largest lemmy instances. We don't even appear on the first page of Fediverse Observer! And the sheer number of lemmy instances online now is huge compared to where it was a couple of weeks ago.And that's before we even talk about kbin and the threadiverse as a whole, of which Lemmy is only a partI can honestly say that this whole thing has shifted my view of just what the future of the fediverse might be. I assumed it would always be microblogging centric, but now, I question that...#fediverse #lemmy #kbin #threadiverse #calckey @lemmy@lemmy.ml @fediverse@lemmy.ml

@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org Our threadiverse instance exploded in the last week, and in the space of a few days went from around 10 user more than double the size of Blahaj.zone. I was completely unprepared for the size of this migration

@JojoCoowoo@universeodon.com @robhughes@scholar.social I don't think I know any LGBTQIA people in real life who don't like the term queer.I do. It's common amongst older trans folk, and straight trans folk of all ages. Similarly, I know intersex folk who don't identify with the word queer. To me, queer is an active and proud rejection of cishetero societal norms in some form or another, and that's not the experience of all LGBTQIA folk

@JojoCoowoo@universeodon.com @robhughes@scholar.social Sure. I mean, I'm proudly and openly queer myself. But I'm not going to tell others they need to identify with the term

@JojoCoowoo@universeodon.com @robhughes@scholar.social What I'm trying to say though is that we aren't all queer. Similar to the way using the word Gay as an umbrella term falls flat as a catch all, Queer falls flat too. I hesitate to use a catch all that ignores the desires of some of the people it's trying to catch

@JojoCoowoo@universeodon.com @robhughes@scholar.social To me, queer is a claim of counter cultural identity. An active pushback against the norms that so often keep us closeted and in denial. Queer is a middle finger to all of that. Any in my experience, many LGBTQIA folk are not that. Those folk don't consider themselves queer, and I don't consider them queer either. The LGBTQIA folk that are happy to keep a low profile, and blend in, they're LGBTQIA too, but there is nothing queer about them

@gme@bofh.social Unfortunately, that's not exactly a sustainable approach. Many bigots deliberately attack and overwhelm vulnerable folk by "just asking questions". Appearing to have good intent, putting a lot of work on the vulnerable person to explain themselves, only to move the goal posts and find more "questions". It's an explicit technique used by bigots to take advantage of just this approach...

@meow@fedi.absturztau.be @Jain@blob.cat They broke in a merge and we haven't fixed them yet, because until very recently, no one else could see them anyway. But they will be fixed :)

@meow@fedi.absturztau.be @Jain@blob.cat Well, at the moment, a quote boost with a CW will do the trick, but AP also allows CWs to be added on regular boosts. The problem is, no one bothers to look for CWs on boosts, and treats them as regular boosts. But a quote boost and a boost and very different behind the scenes, so you really have to pick one or the other. Our hope is that both methods become relatively common

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange I think this is one of those areas where language can be ambiguous. Bog standard is distinct from a standard bog. A standard bog is the SI unit for bogs. But bog standard means that we should be measuring things in bogs, and not marshes or swamps.
