@foone I love that it has a pressure gauge! I wonder if it also came with a can of Freon to top it up like the old Tektronix HV probes?

@foone oh my lord this is such a glorious idea - since apparently we will never solve criminally bad UI/UX :'(the thing is I'd still use it even if it took me way longer to configure and debug than the time it would have taken to do by hand! apparently that is more acceptable to my adhd's frustration limits

@foone I reckon you could fit an MS2130 HDMI-USB3 chip and a little OTG micro into a Framework expansion card? might have to use micro-HDMI butobviously the logical conclusion of this is to have a camera and a keyboard-poking arm on the back of the laptop screen

@foone to fill you with a subtle sense of dread - when you press it and nothing _obviously_ happens? but something feels different

@foone I swear footprints take up 90% of my energy during any design and I hate italthough to be fair parts selection/ordering is the other 70% that I hate

@foone why does nobody seem to have a wee parametric solver CAD that lets you say "this edge of this pad is so-and-so mm from that edge of that hole" so that you can directly input datasheet drawings rather than having to faff around with a calculator and make mistakes?

I only just learned that we have home-grown Australian modems! For those overseas, "woomera" is a Dharug word for a lever that matches the impedance of a hunting spear to that of a human arm - a skilled user can get a massive range increase (I've heard 3× bandied about).

Does anyone have a system they like and trust for managing long-term maintenance stuff? For example, my house has three smoke detectors, and I need to remember to test them every year and replace them every ten. I'd like something to remind me to do things, and where I can record what things are done and when.Hacking up a ticket tracker would work, but it'd be nice to find something that actually does this already! I know of full-fat CMMS (eg Atlas, openMAINT) but they are ginormous.

@foone that does rather identify the object, are we allowed to say what it is if you don't say where it came from?

@foone apparently it is an Ithaca 9800 Food Safety Terminal! here is the maintenance manual, although sadly I don't see anything juicy in it (other than the hamburger): https://device.report/m/28085cbe6bc2d4b023ef8c2cc388c436e693eb21214dcfd01079bd601e81c73c.pdf

I don't know who asked for this, but you can get... a CD player... that pretends to be a USB stick full of WAV files, so you can play CDs in a car too new to have a CD player?? What a cursēd bargain at only 325 roobucks

@projectgus holy crap what a shitshow! thanks for boosting this~This whole "revolution" is highlighting to me a lot of work that our culture labels an "overhead", implying a waste of time, and how much value is actually in that work. The canonical example in software is developing and using a mental model of how software works, while lines of code are really a side-effect rather than the main show.

@projectgus But it's equally true in other fields! One I'm heavily exposed to is doctors' notes - there's this big push to do auto transcription, whatever, but then LLM summarisation for the doctor's records. Talking to the doctors I know well, they spend enormous amounts of time and energy writing notes after interacting with patients - viewed by many as overhead again, but in their view it's a critical part of, essentially, validating (or invalidating) their understanding of what's going on!
