Starting to think there's an “argumentum ad guerrilla” where like, how dare you criticize us/them, we/they are doing REAL revolution in a REAL people's war while you're safe at home.

Remembering my college years and even my youth with people (including myself) conceptualizing three worlds theory in teleological terms, vis. The Philippines is a third world country but through development it can become a first world country. Even a presidential candidate (Mar Roxas) framed three worlds theory in these terms, as if being first world was something to aspire too. But three worlds theory isn't a theory of modernization, but of international power blocs. Fun fact, the Philippines was once considered a first world country due to its extremely close (vassalage) association to the United States. I wonder how Filipinos would react to that.

Greta in North Kurdistan (in Türkiye) and having meeting with Apoists/democratic confederalists was NOT on my bingo card for 2024.

We have to stop thinking in terms of historical precedent as if history was a blueprint for our current crisis. No, revolutionary defeatism is not a universal principle. It was valid for the Bolsheviks because the Russian heartland was not under threat of invasion and imperial occupation. Neither did revolutionaries have any obligation to defend imperial territory. Revolutionary defeatism simply isn't permissible under threat of genocide. The Chinese communists allied with the KMT in an era of genocidal war. Leftists seeking to create united fronts with class enemies doesn't make sense outside the context of the a genocidal fascist invasion. There are specific historical and contingent conditions by which revolutionary defeatism and trans-class unities are to be conducted. These cannot simply be done just because it worked by historical idols.

The martial law playbook in S.Korea seems eerily familiar to Marcosian martial law in the Philippines, framed as an anti-communist security measure. I honestly didn't think such brazen and nakedly obvious displays of authoritarianism was still even possible in nominal democracies.

Looking at the videos of the declaration of martial law in South Korea, I'm surprised by the restraint of the soldiers, like they knew that they were the baddies and were halfheartedly carrying out orders. I don't know much about civil-military relations in S.Korea, but this is miles away from how the military conducts themselves in the Philippines. Or how the IOF conducts themselves in Gaza and the West Bank. In Korea, many in the military are conscripted, while in the Philippines, soldiering is a vocation. IOF conscripts too, but I think settler-colonial relations changes the context. In Korea, the conscripts face their own citizens. In Palestine, the Israeli conscripts do not face their own citizens but the Indigenous Palestinians.

In the Philippines, being a soldier is like being a cop: it's a choice. Then there's also the context of low-level counterinsurgency where the military must occupy peripheries as part of their counterinsurgency. In doing so, they act as occupying forces. This is different from deployment in the core.

Martial law defeated in Korea! Shows that the Marcos playbook can't work today! There's a reason why Duterte's playbook was radically different, relying instead on securitization of a pandemic, low-level counterinsurgency, increasing police budgets, etc., over overt and naked displays of power. Authoritarianism today relies on death by a thousand cuts, not decapitations.

Just picked up the rejected donations of KA POPOY: NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND and then gave a copy to the Third World Studies Center. They seem happy to receive it, said they didn't have a copy before.

Watching House MD and like every episode has a beat where they misdiagnose the patient and poison them halfway to death. They can't keep doing this beat for dozens of episodes, can they?

Fascinating developments. Kabataang Makabayan (KM) pamphlets found in De La Salle University (DLSU) bathrooms. KM is the youth wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. As far as unis go, DLSU is one of the posh “bourgeois” ones.

Images of the pamphlets. This chapter seems to be named KM-Guiller Cadano. NPA@56 refers to the 56th anniversary of the New People's Army.

Saw a video of a guy gutting and cleaning a fish and he referred to parts that Filipinos would term as “malansa” as “gamey.” So I'm wondering if gamey is the English term for malansa.

I feel like a lot of people have a “noble savage” view of democracy tbh.

The idea that if democracy wasn't bourgeois, liberal, colonized, settler, white, etc, etc, it would be good is kinda noble-savage coded. That there exists a pure democracy under the snow of capitalism is a myth. I read once in an essay about repression against anti-genocide protesters for Gaza: “We live in a class dictatorship thinly disguised as a democracy.” But democracy has always been class dictatorship. There was never a democracy that wasn't. Same with the noble-savage trope.

Genuinely, what is even the point of left-populism or democratic socialism, the kind we've seen across the world, the fruits of which have been generally on the decline or retreat in many places in the world? Not that such projects are evil, but that it simply isn't sustainable under the current world order, especially as the ability to make money is more difficult every half decade. Each new domain of extraction, commercialization, commodification, expropriation, and primitive accumulation is less and less profitable. Alexander wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer. What kind of social-democratic taxation–redistributive mechanism would even be possible in the future? Especially with looming climate collapse? We've already breached 1.5C° after all.
