Today's #skiing left me with good vibes. Let me explain.Patvinsuo can be intimidating to even get to because it is so far away from towns and during the winter you can get stuck easily. This went well, I had no problems. It is partly a massive open bog with very little cover and infrastructure. The main purpose of National Parks is to protect nature but that is especially clear with Patvinsuo.I fell into a bog last spring there and that was a hard situation. This time everything went well.

What an incredible day skiing on the open mires of Patvinsuo National Park! So glad I came here instead of going to the ski resort. #Skiing #NationalPark #Nature 🌞❄️

I was just talking to the person who made me move to the north from Helsinki. I was like okay, the injury is bad but my overall fitness is better than before the injury. This guy commands a Border Station in Kainuu, has about 60 people under him. A seriously hard man, take anyone out of any military anywhere in the world and he will outski that person. So I was like yeah I skied 7 km in deep snow in Patvinsuo with the injury. Got a little thumb on the message. Next time 14 kilometers. 😂

This is hard core to me, and I’ve skied the Alps when I was young. These places are remote and you are on your own. You also have to land navigate with a map and a compass because digital things die out there. #Skiing

Way way way more demanding than anything I’ve done on the mountains and I’ve done some of that.

One reason why I wanted to recover from my hip injury well before the summer is that a river like Kerma is so hard to wade in: the current is strong and the river is full of large boulders. This river is so fast and deep that wading can be dangerous even if you are in good physical condition. #FlyFishing #Gym #Fitness

There are many places where you should just not go. Not only because it will kill you but also because you did not understand what it is. #Outdoors #Humility

@W_Lucht Some of the most delicate freshwater salmonid populations are already almost gone from Southern Finland due to river building, trenching of the bogs and forests, and recently hot summer weather. I cannot see how they will survive even a little more warming (0.2°C or so, with continued harsh land-use)

@W_Lucht We're losing the entire ecosystem from the insects up: when the water becomes tainted with humus, the aquatic insects are having a hard time. Then the salmonid fish disappear, the planted ones in the Finnish case.

This is pretty extreme to be honest. I have a down jacket and skiing jacket on, horizontal wet snow and 10 m/s wind. #NorthKarelia #Extreme #IceFishing ❄️

@dianor I’ve always found the Greens a little odd: city people with liberal social principles and a technocratic belief in modernity who look down upon the countryside. I’m more home among the fishermen and hunters because the cities are too consumerist. The North Karelian decarbonization and sufficiency agendas are cultural and widely shared, rather than in the ownership of one political party. #Politics #GreenParty

North Karelia has a special #weather phenomenon in late winter or early spring: although it has already been warmer, sometimes we get these huge snowfalls and then freezing sunny days afterward. It's a great time to ski powder in the backcountry. #Skiinghttps://www.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/saa/liperi?forecast=daily

It's all the same to me nowadays whether the skiing is on flat ground or ice or in the ski resort. The tickets can be expensive and I'd have to faff around with contact lenses there. I've grown apart from the resort culture a bit because it often feels crowded and the industry isn't that sustainable, even if it tries to compensate for the climate burden of operations. #Skiing #Sufficiency

@enog @flickingfeathers I have about 300 in the number one box. Just the time and effort put into making that stuff cannot be put into a value such as money but 3-5 euros for every fly at least. That's a huge financial loss too. 😢

@flickingfeathers @enog Yeah, these modern nymphs are "quick and dirty" ties and you'd be expecting to lose them anyway because of the thin leaders and fishing near the bottom. If that helps with the loss, sure it doesn't.

@flickingfeathers @enog Always keep in mind that fly fishing is just a nice hobby that should not be taken too seriously. 🤣

@enog @flickingfeathers I'd not go below 4X in my fishing. Certainly, if I fish some of the faster and deeper streams that have 3-4 kg trout I use at least 0.25 mm tippets.

@Magpie @enog @flickingfeathers Damn, you guys are delicate. I'd never go less than .25 on the tippet on my home river, especially in the early season.

@enog @flickingfeathers Two full setups usually, three rods are overkill. I don't use a sling, just a regular coat with pockets under the waders or a regular shirt with pockets. Extra gear comes along in a waterproof Ortlieb back pack!
