A playable version of #DOOM on an #LEGO brick using a @Raspberry_Pi #RP2040 by @ancientjames. Uses an accelerometer and tilt for movement, and a capacitance touch sensor to shoot. Subframe sampling to make the tiny monochrome LCD give 8 gray levels (not 3 like I originally thought!). This is miraculous stuff. 😮 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o76U0JPrMFk

@rdaily If you're looking for a #RaspberryPi at the retail price I'd recommend you check @rpilocator for stock, https://rpilocator.com. Some Approved Resellers have boards stock most weeks, I think @adafruit puts batches up on Thursdays (Wednesdays maybe?). They get snapped up quickly though, in minutes.

@rdaily @rpilocator @adafruit As an aside the "estimated shipment date(s)" are generally garbage, they're generated by projecting current supply levels into the future without taking into account any future changes. We expect supply to recover to pre-pandemic levels in the second quarter of 2023, and to be unlimited in the second half of the year. https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/supply-chain-update-its-good-news/

@rdaily @rpilocator @adafruit That's a $230 x86-based board. 🤷♂️

In today's mailbag, a 1.28-inch TFT watch built around the @Raspberry_Pi #RP2040 microcontroller, https://www.tindie.com/products/adz1122/pi-pico-rp2040-128-inch-tft-display-watch-board/. Comes with pre-blown firmware, but absolutely no documentation at all. So I guess it's time to try and figure out how they're talking to the screen. First stop `picotool` to poke around inside the firmware, and then more aggressive methods. Although, with a bit of luck, I can find some datasheets for the screen and other peripherals. Fascinating one!

This article is fascinating because both halves — keep reading you’ll get there — are about commoditisation, and the changing levels of abstraction in computing. The two halves just come at it from very different angles. https://www.theverge.com/23642073/best-printer-2023-brother-laser-wi-fi-its-fine

Today is the day we (maybe) go to space. The launch window for the integrated flight test of the #SpaceX #Starship opens at 07:00 CDT (12:00 UTC) today. Lift off from the SpaceX Starbase in Texas, with reentry and splashdown near Hawaii. #Booster7 #Ship24 Live coverage by SpaceX itself, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5QXreqOrTA, and commentary and live coverage from the folks at NASASpaceflight at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN57x2a_waw.

"…the #TwitterBlue service only gained 28 new subscribers from people who previously had a legacy checkmark." There were 407,000 people who were 'legacy' verified. So… Ouch! 😬 https://jasonpollak.substack.com/p/the-twitter-blue-experiment-went

Getting on a plane to the States on Sunday, and I've just realised that every single American will greet me with "What did you think of the Coronation?"🤦♂️

@matthewvenn It’s on vibrate. I can’t remember the last time I turned the ringer on. But why would I want to talk to people on the phone? What’s wrong with texting me like a civilised person?

@jbenjamint I turned my voicemail off 10 years ago. If they have that sort of message they can damn we’ll email me!

@paul @jbenjamint I can’t figure out why you’d make a phone call rather than message someone in the first place, voicemail is like trying to send someone a Fax. It belongs in the last century.

@jbenjamint @paul Faxes are still used by hospitals a lot. If you workmedical-adjacent it is something you still have to deal with.

Yes, protecting the model against prompt injection is good. But if they cared about safety then they'd make it *easy* for you to tell you're talking to an LLM, not harder. https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/19/24201414/openai-chatgpt-gpt-4o-prompt-injection-instruction-hierarchy

The decision to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius will result in the loss of the .io top-level domain. As, once the treaty is signed, the British Indian Ocean Territory will cease to exist. https://every.to/p/the-disappearance-of-an-internet-domain
