@codewiz Congrats on getting an R7800! I have one as well and it's one of the finest pieces of hardware available. Good call on putting OpenWrt on it as well!On your build, did you build from master (snapshot) or 19.07? Also, are you familiar with SQM on OpenWrt?

@codewiz It's very true--have had to do it a few times myself 😂 It's nearly impossible to brick an R7800.Are you using SQM? If not, I highly recommend it over old-school QoS.Also, lots of great stuff going on around ath10k and AQL. This is a pretty active thread (I actively participate there too) and worth a look: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/aql-and-the-ath10k-is-lovely/59002

@codewiz That's the one! Agreed that it wouldn't help your current situation much, but definitely worth some time to install and tune it once you get a WAN connection directly into the R7800!Also, FWIW I actually run an OpenWrt VM as my WAN router now. I now build a very stripped down build of OpenWrt for my R7800 as a "dummy AP". Has no firewall, no routing, no fuss. Just minimum wireless config stuff to handle a couple SSIDs tied to a couple VLANs.

This little guy should be delivered on Monday. I found out about it thanks to @kuleszdl and I am super excited to throw OpenWrt on there and see what it can do! #projects #openwrt

@kev @cooper Fully agree with @kev. It can become a headache dealing with maintenance and uptime over the long haul. In my case, it seemed like a cool and fun thing at first. But after a while I was spending my free time maintaining my servers instead of tinkering with new things and I eventually moved to a hosted service with my custom domain. Now, my email still works 24/7, but I got some time back in life. 🙂

@kev @jordanmiracle I like this analogy 👍 One of my biggest gripes with Twitter is that everything there is political, in one way or another. In a world where everything is already political constantly, I want to “escape” to a social platform where I can engage and learn with fellow tech gurus. I don’t begrudge anyone for having a political stance in society, but it doesn’t need to be the focal point of every discussion and certainly doesn’t need to be the basis for bullying. *step off soapbox*

@bigbrovar Congrats on ordering one. Did you order directly from FriendlyElec? It's a nice little device. But it's hard for me to compare objectively because my primary OpenWrt box (VM) is an x86_64 beast.I'm a huge fan of SQM running layer_cake, but I have had some issues with the NanoPi R2S keeping up with my max speeds (450/24.5mbps). It was somewhat better on piece_of_cake, but that's like several steps backwards from what I have with my x86_64 box...

@bigbrovar Stability was fine for me, though. I got the fan + heatsink version and it ran 50c-65c under typical load.I was building from this repo: https://github.com/jayanta525/openwrt-nanopi-r2s/tree/rk3328I think there will be many more improvements over time that will make this little device run even better, but for now I'm going to just keep tinkering with It on the side and stick with my x86_64 setup.Hope this helps! Send any other questions my way :)#NanoPiR2S

@mike I can sympathize. Multi-hour video conferences are rough. Unfortunately, all the norm in IT, and even more so in these COVID days. Do you find yourself trying to maintain an abnormal posture when you know you’re on video?

@mike Nice background! I also started with BASIC on a C64! (Many fond memories...) My first tech job was continuing development of some homegrown RF engineering software in C++. I loved it. Moved on to the .NET world from there (out of necessity) and developed in C#, VB.net, and some J# for a bit. Moved into IT systems work for a while and picked up the typical shell/scripting languages (even PowerShell...eh). Fast forward...now I develop in Python daily! It’s a great language!

@mike I probably wasn’t very kind to PowerShell in my previous message. It’s a fine tool and it has its place for sure, as you demonstrated. :-)Have you ever played with any esoteric programming languages for the “fun” of it? 🤣

@geotechland I deleted my Facebook account years ago after doing a college research project on Facebook’s ties to other individuals/companies/governments. Scary stuff. Anyway, just deleted my two Instagram accounts this weekend in favor of PixelFed! I’m now “Facebook” free and never looking back!!

Any suggestions for the "best" secure and private e-mail service out there in 2022? I know the usual suspects--ProtonMail, Hushmail, Tutanota, Mailfence, etc. But I'm looking for those with personal experience with any of these offerings who can share any pros or cons they live with. #email #privacy #security #emailprivacy #help

@hyde I'm kind of rusty on gpg/pgp these days, so I probably should get back up-to-speed. I self-hosted my email for several years, but found I was spending a lot more time maintaining it than I cared to invest.Do you find the same or is your self-hosting pretty hands-off at this point?

@kev @mike Before even seeing this, I had a nearly successful "no tech Sunday" yesterday. Spent a lot of time outside taking pictures of birds (one of my favorite pastimes) and chilling with my family. Best day in a while!
