One thing I care a lot about is not letting #science become my whole personality. #Astronomy is my job, not who I am, and this is why I enforce a strict work life balance for myself.So, now that I'm in the "official" #astrodon instance where we'll talk a lot about #space, I think it's also important that we share what else contributes to who we are as *people*, not just who we are as scientists.Saturday is already for cats, so on Sundays I'm going to talk about hobbies, not astronomy. 📚🧶🌈

Today the #hobby I'm focusing on is #reading. My physical #TBR list is unwieldy and my goal is to get that down to ~10 books next year. So I'm curled up with a tea, a blanket, and a terrible #book that I won't admit to reading 😂📚

But fair warning, some astronomy may come on Sundays if there's something really exciting happening in space because the universe doesn't know our calendar and has its own schedule. And some hobbies may come during the week if I finish a really exciting knitting or cross stitch project or a book I just have to share with you all. 🔭🧶📚

This is my main problem with the DM set up here, I can't filter them into a separate inbox if it's from someone I don't follow. This one is relatively tame, but it's unwelcome and unnecessary. DMs were a constant source of stress on the other site, but at least I could filter them.(User info blocked as to not start a pile on)

If I'm wrong and there is a way to filter DMs, PLEASE let me know. Or if I can just straight up turn them off? Which isn't ideal but I'd prefer that over random messages from random men.

Reminder to *please* use content warnings on posts about the US election. I've seen some users just write "CW: Politics" or something at the top of their post, so this also serves as a reminder that mastodon has a wonderful content warning option you should use instead so users can more easily choose what to interact with.Here's a screenshot that shows where it is on the Tusky app, but you can find it in a similar place on most apps/browsers.

@amerika This is not speech policing, everyone is still welcome to post about politics or whatever they want.Using content warnings allows everyone to decide what they interact with and have more control over their timeline. If you don't mind seeing things that are typical behind content warnings here you can change your settings to always expand them.

FYI, if you also have timelines that are filled with bird site mirroring, many of them have the "🐦🔗" emojis back to back and adding that to your filters works wonders 😊

@jmwilson I don't mirror and I'm slightly annoyed by how many accounts have showed up that are only mirrors, which is why I was trying to filter them.

On my previous instance I had blocked and reported a couple accounts and noted that when I went to migrate instances I had zero blocked accounts to download. At the time I just assumed I had messed up and not actually blocked them, but after some blocking/reporting on this instance it seems like if your mods do an instance-wide block for the account then they are removed from your personal block list?This seems like a major safety oversight?

Today was exhausting.I asked someone to run a test on some data for me and the response was to assume I didn't know what I was talking about. This is not the first time this person has done this, they are constantly speaking down to me about science. I see how they treat colleagues that are men, and it's completely different from how they treat women.So anyways, I'm looking for more #WomenInSTEM to connect with here! 🔭🧑🔬
