@hn50 I love this! I was thinking about doing something like this because I want this functionality which is very #Xmonad like. And something I yearn for.

@debacle @cmccullough @pidgin @gajim @dino Why not grab jabber.el and update it to current standards? That's how #Emacs grows.

@bortzmeyer J'ai beaucoup aimé python pendant le 90's.Mais pas du tout maintenant.J'ai toujours aimé C et lisps et pas du tout n'importe quelle langue qui commence avec java.

@abnv Emacs has most of that built in. It had it 30 years ago too.You could just install doom or spacemacs.The question is how far do you want to go?Eglot, LSP, tree sitter, etc.The emacs wiki is your friend. Anything you want is findable.Speedbar might be something you want.The emacs from scratch config is good and has lots of videos if that's your thing. You'll learn a lot and it's not a huge config.Here's a few.Doom, spacemacs, prelude, uncle Dave's, emacs for writers, rougier, emacs from scratch, crafted-emacs, minimal-emacs, emacs-live, scimax, Purcell, writing studio, writing-with-emacs, for writers

Well, I've started it, I created a new #Emacs configuration stripped of all Evil vim emulation.After 30 years of vi emulation on emacs I'm switching to meow. Or at least giving it a go. It istill modal editing but is very minimal using mostly native emacs.I recreated leaner global, leader and C-c maps for Meow and I've changed the map to better fit with my habits and the Hands Down Promethium keyboard layout which I've only been learning a little while. It has replaced HD neu. I'm still in practice every day mode before switching to my strong fallback, Dvorak.I guess I'll be learning meow and Promethium at the same time.

@redstarfish @tusharhero It's modal editing like kakoune or helix but with a philosophy of minimal invasiveness to the emacs keybindings and functionality. Essentially leveraging emacs but providing modal editing.https://github.com/meow-edit/meowhttps://github.com/meow-edit/meow

@tusharhero @Mehrad There are some nice minimal #emacs configurations like this one. It's better than the default but isn't overwhelming in what it does.https://github.com/jamescherti/minimal-emacs.dBut a newbie doesn't know to go look for one.

@sacha I recently contributed a bunch of code to #Emacs #EMMS. As a result I was invited to join the development team which I'm excited to be a part of.My code was merged last week for version 23 of EMMS. There was a small breaking change.There is now an entire system for searching and filtering tracks. It's backwards compatible with the old browser filters, but very different and very powerful. It is interactive and all filters can be represented as data.It's super cool and very enjoyable to use.I wrote a post to give an overview to it on my shiny new website here.https://zeniesqis.statichost.eu/code/2025-07-14-the-emms-filter-system/

@farcaller Seems like you need to learn how introspective Emacs is and how to use the help system and documentation. First you have to know what feature you are using for that feature. Then you need to find out how to change that feature to do what you want. Often what you want is already there, you just have to find it and use it how you want.

@farcallerThere is a lot to explore there no matter the situation. b, k, f, if you have orderless, it's even better. You can guess keywords.It's all there. Everything you need to know. Built-in and if it reduces to source, then ok. I sorta prefer to dig around in the code. It's raw, but it's all there.And you can jump to it anywhere.

@farcaller C-h will give you a menu. You should explore it all.But, if you are somewhere, anywhere, C-h b is key bindings.C-h k allows you to hit any keys and find out what it calls. F is to search for a function if you know, or can guess the name. Orderless helps a lot with that. P is packages. It'll tell you what it does hopefully.These all go to doc. In the doc you can always go to source or any other references.'m' for mode takes you to the reference for whatever major and minor modes that you've got going on.Modes and keymaps are important to understand.It's super versatile. You could have many modes and keymaps happening at once.C-h..

@codinghorror I love that you don't like it.Stop tracking people. Problem solved.Tracking is not necessary. It is immoral.It is tracking that ruins the internet, not cookie notices.

@publicvoit That is how everything seems to be going.Paid, AI. Bigtech is putting in all the hooks.The generations that were inoculated in youth with windows seem lost and misguided to me. But we could say that about a lot of things in these times

@tusharhero @bbatsov That's why I like meow. I'm starting to wonder what meow actually does for me besides provide a shorter keymap without C or M. That is pretty nice though.
