@manlius @tiago @lmrocha @estebanmoro @hirokisayama @PessoaBrain @danielemarinazzo As soon as someone can propose a workable solution to the problem of losing posts when migrating to another instance, users will happily migrate.

@tiago @manlius @lmrocha @estebanmoro @hirokisayama @PessoaBrain @danielemarinazzo Regardless of whether there's a point to it or not (a debatable issue indeed), users will still be more inclined to migrate if there is a workable solution to the problem.

@tiago Yup, all true. But it's easy to see, both here and over on twitter, that this fact is a real obstacle to people migrating. And also in many cases a cause of instant regret after a migration, since it seems that many of the tutorials about how to migrate either gloss over or else omit entirely, rather than emphasizing, this aspect.

@FroehlichMarcel Thanks for that reply Marcel, you've expressed that very clearly. People in general have gotten into their heads the idea that they will lose their posts, and any tutorials on instance migration I've looked up out of curiosity have barely broached this dimension.

@Coocho @clive 100% my experience too, except that DDG has been my default user for about a year. To be honest, it's only useful if I'm in a "I feel lucky" kinda mode of search. If I want to *actually find something* I invariably find myself having to revert to Google.

@rolle @GrahamDowns @Em0nM4stodon If I have appreciated seeing something, for whatever reason, and I furthermore think other people might also appreciate seeing it, either for the same or for other reasons, then I'll boost it. I find it a simple to apply Occam's razor for choosing what to or not to boost.

Peak fascist rhetoric from #AndrewTate, cheered on by #TuckerCarlson, recalling the vile "nature of the negro" myths of KKK promotional film Birth of a Nation era, charmingly labelled by Tate here as "high-testosterone 3rd worlders." And all this boosted to millions and millions of individuals by the boy tyrant in chief of #Twitter, #Musk.Non-fascist Twitter (yes, such a division has become pertinent) needs to make a statement in response. I recommend a walk out.

The content of our #consciousness depends crucially upon inhibitory processes through which selection and elimination can occur. More and more research (some of my own included) shows that physiological age-related #memory decline is not so much an issue of increasing but in fact *decreasing* forgetting (i.e. inhibitory "elimination"). Without directed inhibition, discrete memories have difficulty arriving to "consciousness" due to excess noise from overlap with other memories. ⬇️ @cognition

Radical qualitative shifts like this ⬆️ in our understanding of fundamental cognitive processes (i.e. poor memory can arise from a deficit rather than an excess of forgetting) are truly fertile ground for future research into the nature, if not of "consciousness" itself, then at least into the processes that determine what enters #consciousness, studying differences between pre-conscious and conscious deliberation, and understanding why only part of deliberation *is* conscious, etc. ⬇️ @cognition

Not only is this ⬆️ fertile ground, but it's ground which in large part covers an area still overly neglected: basic research into the cognition of our common laboratory animals. Not research using animals merely as models for various human conditions (also important work), but fundamental basic research into the naturalistic behaviors, underlying cognition, and underlying neurophysiology of these thinking, deliberating biological beings.@cognition

The greatest irony of the proliferation of bad readings of #Nietzsche is that no other philosopher ever took more pains than he in genuinely educating his readership in... how to read! @philosophy

Given his stature in philosophy, and for all its apparent incongruence, John #Dewey's "mystic experience" is surprisingly unknown. Yet its conclusion is a thing of serene beauty. He described it to Max Eastman, maybe 60 yrs after the fact, for Eastman's book 'Heroes I Have Known': #pragmatism #instrumentalism #experimentalism @pragmatism @philosophy
