@WolfJay Unlucky experiences in the end I suppose with HP and the previous manufacturers that have had as usually if it wouldn't turn on at all then it would indicate for example the RAM failing or not being detected properly anymore. Old Windows laptops overall were built like garbage such as having overheating issues from anything.

@WolfJay Well with modern Windows laptops (Shipped with 10) there are no driver issues at all anymore but if install 10 on a laptop with 7 or even XP it will usually struggle to find drivers. I do like anything more than Windows as OS but it's just the software support in the end really but I can't be bothered to get a secondary GPU for passthrough either which could be a solution.

@WolfJay Windows 10 animations are laggy af on laptop HDDs and overall bad experience. It's pretty much required at this point to have an SSD to run Windows 10 which is ridiculous.

@WolfJay I do agree with having SSDs now on everything but they expected all these old users of previous versions to transfer over to Windows 10 and it's just gonna end up being a really laggy experience as the older people have HDDs still as the main drive. In the end regarding the OS stuff now is that they want to push everyone on 10 which they can collect a lot of data out from and push their own products as people simply don't have the choice anymore to stay on the older systems as it would be dangerous.

@WolfJay Windows 7 design started getting old by standards but it was always solid and now on the setup of Windows 10 you are shoved a lot of data collection and other things straight off, even re-offering their own products such as OneDrive sometimes on updating the OS to a new update.

@WolfJay It's quite clear recently from Microsoft anyways when they bought out Mojang and made the Bedrock version which now has for example skins for real money, maps or anything of that sort and now they have the interest to buy out Discord and if they do buy Discord I do expect them to quite heavily monetise it in some way.

@alex The wages are really fucked ngl in India which is why all the outsourcing goes there especially development wise but the quality of code really varies.

@alex @pasture I think some phones there cost less because of the economy but Apple phones still tend to cost bit more to the same mark (1000 dollars) but then people end up buying some of the older iPhones instead.

@graf What's your actual costs if don't mind telling, you must be eating shit tons of bandwidth. I used to host a public file hosting site a few years back which used 300TB a month and it only worked at the time because CloudFlare didn't care then.

@graf That def seems costly but at least have it covered. I personally have my shit being covered by donations too and without them it would be hell to run these services.

@graf Can imagine what it's like on Mastodon if would have stayed on that and makes a lot of the instances shutdown because they don't end up migrating to Pleroma, the amount of resources that are needed is so different. Bandwidth is pretty much the most costly thing with hosting anything large scale user base wise like you said when everything else like the hardware requirements do come out as rather cheap in comparison.

@graf Yeh my instance has been using Pleroma too and I used Pleroma too back some years ago but shutdown because lost interest with the Fediverse but came back. If I would have kept running the file hosting site I had which is now private instead with steady consistent users, probably would have just shutdown because of the bandwidth costs as didn't have any other CDN options at the time either like now there are. BitMitigate used to be owned by a guy I knew at IRC as there was a concept before that but now it's owned by the Epik company I think too.

@graf Well good to know as planned to use it for some personal things but seems like better to stay away because of that unfortunately. I used to use the predecessor of BitMitigate which worked fine back then but nowadays it's obv used by 8chan and whatever too if correct.

@normandy @user @Moon @TransGal4872 @orekix @tn5421 @wzqtparor I think in WSL2 it runs the kernel in a virtual environment as the original WSL was some form of interface instead but besides of that don't know much but still pretty coolio. Still needs more improvement regarding some software like systemd and so.

@kura @tn5421 @hntooter To me basically it looks like "Just because we didn't leak any passwords, we won't notify anyone of the breach either even when other important details got leaked". Pretty sure things like emails def got leaked, names of people, possible places they live at roughly, phone numbers and whatever else literally from what I have seen myself.

@tn5421 @hntooter @kura I have seen literally lists where they even have the jobs of the people and generally other information what people have on their profiles. That is a pain too like it's with Discord where you have to wait 14 days till they actually delete your account and if you ask them to speed it up then they won't.

@tn5421 @hntooter @kura I did that once for my Facebook data and there was more than I expected that I didn't even know of but I expect that there is still more data that Facebook didn't provide like what happened with that one guy some years back who asked for their data from Spotify and it was so much fucking data he got out of it.

@tn5421 @hntooter @kura I've worked with some startup companies in the recent years too and the amount of analytics and tracking software that is used is crazy, you can track each thing people click on the most and many really small things like this literally.

@tn5421 @hntooter @kura And as the time goes we start shifting more into automated customer support on the phone support and ticket support which makes it ridiculously difficult to solve anything if used the wrong keyword or if on phone support then must press the right numpad combination to get to the right category you are looking to get help on.
