@kravietz @jon @vosje62 Because they're stupid rules and need to be reformed. I agree with Jon's post, though I doubt anybody envisions anything extra hasty ever happening in the EU, but would add to this: "There’s a mass of everyday political problems in Ukraine that have to be solved before it could join the EU." And there's a mass of everyday political problems in the EU that need to be solved before anybody can join the EU and this is our only choice to reform in the foreseeable future.

@wolf480pl @ruff @mntmn The burden of proof on EC corruption is on you, that's how it works. And I have plenty of reform ideas, you just probably wouldn't like most of them.(The absolutely ridiculous practice of 1 Commissioner per country so the Council can dump its deadweight or its opposition in the EC and treat it like an elephant cemetery comes to mind...)

@toriver @randahl Not if EDIP/PDIE ever manages to emerge unscathed(ish) from the claws of member statelets who want to kiss the ring. 65% has to be EU-made, with limits on the rest (3rd countries like Ukraine, South Korea, Canada etc have to sign a defence agreement wth the EU to access EU funds). So far it's survived the Polish Council presidency, let's see if the Danes are serious about their new status as Atlanticists Mugged by Reality and get it passed through the Council.

@Sustainable2050 @randahl Do we have "strategic enablers" in 🇪🇺 ? Do we have air defence and sufficient targeting intel and intel of any kind to provide to Ukraine as of tonight? (I know France contributes, but it can't be sufficient). Do we have enough military satellites and joint intel collection for both 🇪🇺🇺🇦 ? If the Dutch government agreed to do eurobonds tomorrow so we could finance those things plus a couple of aircraft carriers and extra French nukes, do we have joint command and control?

@Sustainable2050 @randahl If the answer is No (it is and it will be for another 3-5-10 years) then I for one can only thank europatriot Teflon Mark for trying. It's a funny redemption arc given the role he played with his fellow frugals/Hansa League etc. in keeping the EU underfunded and vassalised. It might not work, it might not last, but until we build IRIS2, provide Ukraine with decent air support, change EU treaties to integrate further etc. etc., nobody in the EU can afford to judge him.

@Nonilex the "large stash" is so "large" it would barely cover Ukraine's bills for the two years in question and then we'd be right where we are today: we'd need to issue eurobonds anyway, but in who knows what EUCO configuration. More difficult to scale up? Right. Because we don't already have a precedent (massively oversubscribed, demand far outstrips supply for eurobonds). What utter embarrassment from 'Merica's "newspaper of record".
