@switchingsocial @DialMforMaraI'm thinking about joining it, especially once ActivityPub support is sorted out, but I'm not sure which instance to join since most of them don't seem to have descriptions unlike Mastodon instances, any recommendations or ways of finding out what they're about instead of just joining them? I'd really like to find one that is LGBT+ Friendly and that protects privacy and people (especially from hate) as much as possible. Thank you.

@izaliamaeA lesbian woman is signalling to another woman, who isn't shown, with a rainbow. It is coming from her mouth.

@cocoron serious question then, since I have though the guardian (uk) was good, where can I go for news that actually is progressive and gives space to more voices? Thank you.

@invaderxanI actually think anyone who does things by the scientific method, student, professor or just some person in a lab, or home somewhere, is a scientist, doesn't have to be doing it professionally, if that makes sense?I never bought into the idea that you have to have a PhD, wear a white coat, be working with other scientists or be in a shared lab space to be one.

So what with the new Australian Law and GCHQ wanting to use ‘virtual crocodile clips’ does that mean I have to give up communicating with anyone digitally even on things previously thought of as ‘safe’ such as Wire?If so, what do we do next?If not how can we know that even source apps are secure considering they can be /compelled/ to put things in without letting us know and without fixing bugs/improving security to disallow security agencies or risk having their apps/services disallowed?Where can we go to find apps not usually allowed if they don’t comply or will the government make state level blocking/rerouting mandatory for these apps/services?

@aralAlternatively you can view it on invidious ( https://invidio.us ) which doesn't track you, simply replace all the youtube or youtu.be stuff with invidio.us, you can keep the unique video identifier though. So https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OEPsqFLhHBc becomes https://invidio.us/watch?v=OEPsqFLhHBcHope this helped!

@el_joa @krozruch @aralTrue, and if you're on Desktop then FreeTube ( https://github.com/FreeTubeApp/FreeTube ) is another good alternative too for watching videos, it lets you subscribe without an account too!

@alcinnzHow does one get into learning how to read and actually program code? I'd really like to but I'm not sure where to start.Good answers, thank you :)

If you see any equipment connected to any communications equipment/infrastructure that shouldn’t be there and you are physically able to then please remove it and destroy it. No one should be doing mass hacking/cracking and data extraction or spying on whole communities, areas, nations, countries etc.Thank you.

So I was wondering last night:Exactly how does one design a good looking website that is functional and possibly /dynamic/ without slowdown/loads of non-free and complex scripts. Can it be done simply with things like CSS etc (even the dynamic part) or do you have to sacrifice some moving/dynamic parts for speed? Thank you.

Just because something is written/said in another language and it sounds funny to a person who's first language is English (or another language where it might be thought of as funny) doesn't mean you should make fun of it or interpret it in a way which is disrespectful, because that's what it is disrespectful. Instead learn about the culture and language, learn to respect it :)

So I saw a few toots about adblocking etc recently and someone said it could break the revenue streams of sites. That got me thinking, can we /actually/ break the corporate web? Can we make the internet decentralised and not under the control of corporations or centralised services/organisations?Can we make the web a place where users can control all the content they see and all content they generate is safe and theirs and never gets sold without their clear and express permission?Such a place I dream of, far from the institutions and harms of the world around me, where we might truly be ourselves, even if that means being anonymous/pseudononymous to achieve that goal.

Look, I get it, you don't want people using proprietary platforms at all, not even to get your stuff, but charging money on those proprietary platforms whilst you keep it free on FOSS platforms means you'll frustrate and alienate a lot of users because unfortunately, the proprietary platforms just work, the FOSS ones don't sometimes. This seems to be a trend amongst FOSS developers they make decisions to do or not do something whilst not considering the impacts of their decisions.. 1/2

and I get it, I was an open source advocate for a long time, I still am to some degree, but making decisions whilst not considering users who either can't pay if you go that route or those that can't tech support but are expected to (I mean have you ever tried to get help from the open source community? It's vile.) Whilst not actually giving users what they ask for or fixing legitimate problems is just absurd and goes against what _should_ be the spirit of open source. 2/2

So I was at a group last night and a lovely person was doing their best to explain how friendship worked to me, telling me the ‘rules’ about how to talk about oneself and also when to talk about oneself and when to listen, why it feels like people are often ignoring me or not talking to me much and I’m having to do all the ‘work’. However, I then got home and talked to a close friend about it and they said that you should’t have to hide yourself/pretend to be someone you’re not because then are you really friends? As they don’t really know who you are.So I’m wondering where is the line? Should there be one? Are there some ‘rules’ we should follow if only to make people feel at ease and if so how do we then introduce our real messy selves to them or are there some friendships where that will never or should never happen? I wonder.

I really dislike the use of things like Discord etc for creating communities I don't trust closed source software nor their privacy policy and business model. Please can we stop using it and similar things? Thanks.
