I think it's time that I get a little #RetroComputing project like all the sensible people here are doing.I have two #DEC #microVAX and last time they've been powered up they had #NetBSD 1.5.2 which was the latest at the time. I think upgrading one to 10.0-BETA will be a start.I also have an HP 700 serial terminal, which seems to work fine, and can be used as serial console. Will probably reply to this toot making it "unlisted" when I have anything to add.

Following interesting hashtags has the disadvantage that there will be people who fill one's timeline with toots containing just these hashtags and images without alt-text.Starting now, I'm blocking anybody who never posts any text apart from hashtags. No need to pollute my timeline.Than you for your attention.

OK, so this Shiva AccessPort #ISDN router boots and accepts commands on the "admin" serial port. However the "admin" command requires a password and it doesn't accept any of the ones found in the various online lists. There isn't a "factory reset" switch or a hole in which one can push an unbent paperclip. The web interface also doesn't help (more in the alt text to get past the 500 chars limit!)So, does any #RetroComputing #VintageComputing people have a suggestion on how to reset it?

I suppose I'll find some photos for this #MarshMadness thing. Here are two view of Morecambe Bay, Nort-West England, the first one from Arnside and the second one from Kents Bank. Not shown here is the crossing by wading seven miles through water and quicksand, because, well, the camera had to be safely in my pack... apart from one photo of me just getting in the water. In a reply to this, in a minute or so, there will be some birds.

Looking west out of my upstairs window earlier (18:33 UTC). Clear sky with Jupiter and Venus very visible. The second photo is later (18:57 UTC) and also has a shorter exposure so it only shows the two planets and not the trees.#NightSky

And a few hours later (23:34 UTC) looking out the same window, Venus and Jupiter are no longer visible, but there's Mars almost hiding behind the Moon - in the photo it's just above and to the left of the big shiny thing but it's quite visible.Full guessing of what stars are what: https://nova.astrometry.net/user_images/7423374#original

Jupiter is getting closer to Venus. First photo was taken at 18:26 UTC with a 70mm lens, for the second one I got back with a 300mm at 18:39 UTC.#NightSky #Venus #Jupiter(edit - forgot to mention: I'm in central France)

Guess where it was overcast last night? But tonight #Venus and #Jupiter are visible again, so as usual here's a photo from my library / retrocomputing room window.19:23 UTC, Venus is now the one above and Jupiter the one below. The two photos differ only by exposure time.

And another clear-ish night, so one last photo of #Venus and #Jupiter while they are still close together but on the way to separate again. Also a bonus close up of #Jupiter while I had my hands on a 960mm lens.18:47 UTC, from Central France.

Yesterday I said: "one last photo". Well, I lied. I went to the garden to see what I could cook for dinner and the sky had cleared again, and so, forgetting about harvesting anything, I went and grabbed the camera instead.#Venus and #Jupiter, together and separately #Nightskyedit: forgot to add: 18:34 UTC, from Central France.

Oh #PhotoMonday already? But we have had one just seven days ago! This is the Forth Rail Bridge, seen from (the cycle lane to the side of) the Forth Road Bridge (there are two of these now, this is from the one closest to the Rail bridge).

@dentangle It's bad for several reasons.#accessibility - cloudflare, akamai and fastly will add captchas to any browser they don't like, including the ones which make things more accessible. The result is that sites using these services become unusable.#security - having a man-in-the-middle attack by default on every access.#privacy - all it needs is a court order from a US judge for your data to go to whoever wants it.

I found something frightening which I forgot I wrote. It's a Perl module. It adds "COME FROM" to Perl.I haven't yet dared testing it with a more recent version of Perl than the one it was written for, but it looks like there's nothing dependent on Perl's internal in it, so it may just work...#intercal #clcintercal #ComeFrom

I seem to have a way to find weird behaviour in systems. Today it's #NetBSD A program is sending multicast packets and another one listening for them. The second one always seems to get the first 21 packets and then stops receiving. However if I run tcpdump to see what happens, all packets arrive (both to tcpdump and to the program listening).BUT and here it gets weird, if I redirect the standard output of tcpdump to a file, the packets don't arrive.Or if I "tcpdump ...|grep" - also nothing

Sigh, time to look about running my own instance again, and that before this one gets "upgraded" (really enshittified) to mastodon 4.2.0.Obviously, I won't be running Mastodon. Also won't be running Pleroma/Akkoma because I tried them and oh shudder they are bad.So... any suggestions? Essential features include:* no infinite scrolling, or at least a way to disable that* admin interface not written for somebody with perfect eyesight (that means you, Akkoma)
