@clive yeah, I think it’s from their training set for scientific and formal writing, which is worse than we would like. You can of course tell it to write in whatever style you want, and it does well.

New Post at Transportist.Net: Thoughts on Substack, https://www.transportist.net/p/thoughts-on-substack, , I’ve used Substack for a few years now, having migrated The Transportist (previously the Transportationist) from WordPress.com, and before that from Moveable Type hosted by the University of Minnesota Library, and before that from Blosxom on my own internet-connected desktop at work, back when they allowed us to host from our own desktops. I also use Substack for newsletters for our open

@interfluidity Speeding is bad and puts fellow citizens at risk for personal convenience. But there is no way to know every law everywhere, and the expectations of that are silly. You are a hypocrite if you resist the arrest, deny the crime, or claim the judge was corrupt instead of admitting the crime after being proven guilty. In Australia Speed limits go with type of road and are rarely marked, so there’s a lot of guessing.

@interfluidity I can screenshot though, that hasn't been blocked. I would bet the PDF/Hard Copy restriction is part of agreements with publishers.

@interfluidity Seems a statement of fact that they can do what they want. “Faithless electors” in the electoral college are well known. I haven't seen much on "faithless delegates”

@mike this is a real issue, and there should be a better way to have a shared identity across multiple systems.

@mike I was thinking more of a Federated Identity. Some trusted server(s) would host my ID(s) and the tokens to log into many other services I choose to connect with. So I could even use an email address as my identity, (or my identity as an email address) and it would be verified somewhere, and then my ID would be that. I could set up accounts anywhere with that identity. I imagine this is non-trivial to implement and am sure there are even more issues with adoption.

@interfluidity Defending Baltimore from the invading British at Federal Hill. You might need to turn the cannon around.

@interfluidity that too. And probably different specific canons, but “In 1814, having been promoted to Commodore, David Porter took command of a military battery that was established on Federal Hill in anticipation of an attack by sea from the British which never came.” https://www.federalhillonline.com

I’d been calling it Baptists and Bootlickers, those who through sheer stupidity believe in tariffs and those who will profit from exemptions after bribing those who most be bribed, but don’t forget the original Bootleggers, just illegally bring stuff across the border without tipping the Don.From: @interfluidity https://zirk.us/@interfluidity/114303762656289717

@interfluidity The US should just join Australia with Ranked Choice Voting. This allows smaller parties to have votes not wasted. The Senate has an aspect of proportionality to it, but I don’t think that’s core. Mandatory voting is useful, along with an independent electoral commission.
