Time for some electronics projects again! Got in two packages from JLCPCB just the other day.

The OLED controller has enough on-board graphics RAM to trivially implement double buffering for tear-free playback. With that animations look even better!

@jeder @kaia @f2k1de Yep, wonder if they usually buy two donors or if the buyers are mostly repairshops that use the GPU dies for cards from their customers.

@kaia @f2k1de That is what 12V straight to the GPU die look like 💀Could of course also be a short somewhere else but I've just seen too many power stages fail short from input straight to output.

@foone I don’t even understand why one would even want to develop let alone use Chrome on a Pi. It is just a slow and painful experience.

Hey fedi, at #38C3 three of my Blinkekatzen have gone missing. They are cat-shaped lights that have a label on the bottom with my Fedi handle, mobile number and link to my blog. I had them deployed in hall 3.Please let me know if you find them somewhere or have taken them with you by accident.Boost appreciated!

On the plus side I managed to repair the Blinkekatze that broke at 38C3. Seems a solder joint on the LGA barometric pressure sensor failed. Quick retin and reflow fixed that. Back to 25 working Blinkekatzen now.Might also be able to revive another one. Think that one needs the battery gauge reballed.

Ok, sadly they did not turn up at lost and found yet. Think I will either build a bunch more or finally design a revision 2 with longer battery runtime so I can also usefully have them at camps and such without needing to recharge constantly. I have so many plans for cool projects again :blahaj:

Had the urge to revisit an old project recently. A project so old that I only posted about it on Twitter even! It's a tiny monochrome 8x8 pixel LED matrix measuring in at only 12x12mm.Back when posting about it initially I failed to come up with an interesting animation to show on the matrix itself.I've finally come up with something now:

The underlying concept is quite simple really. The matrix is displaying the population of toroidal 64x64 Conway's Game of Life board. The brightness of each LED represents the population (number of cells alive) in an 8x8 area within the board. The resulting animation is quite pleasant, even hypnotizing to look at.

There are some additional tricks involved to prevent the simulation from always playing out the same or getting stuck in a potentially visually boring loop.Every once in a while a few life cells are injected in at a pseudo-random position to introduce some entropy.Additionally the number of cells dying and becoming alive is monitored. If there is very little fluctuation in overall population over a few seconds some fresh cells are injected as well to prevent stale patterns from persisting.

I recently found myself in need of a reasonably fast 32 bit ARM system to test performance of an algorithm implemented in C compiled to thumb code. I just now rediscovered that I own an Odroid XU4! That is the perfect target for this type of testing :yayblob:
