For those who celebrate #ColumbusDay, I have a fun little 2-part celebration story.Many years ago, I was the president of my Native American Student Association in college. This was in Charleston, SC. The south, where white people just absolutely love their historical reenactments (What is up with white people and historical reenactments?).One Columbus Day, some "heritage" group decided to sail a tall ship to a beach in Charleston and, wearing full period costume, re-enact Columbus' landing on the beach (I know, kinda far from where it happened, but… white people and reenactments 🤷🏽♀️).A bunch of us decided to protest, and stand with signs like "We were already here" and "What took you so long?" and "'Discovered' is a bit strong but whatever."I was actually a bit disappointed because there were only like 6 of us who showed up, so we were the "silly over-eager students" who people could mock.But…

Little did we know that at the same time, a bunch of people from the local Santee and Kiawah tribes dressed up in full regalia, and showed up.We were pretty disappointed actually. I mean, it's a common tactic for white people to get Native American people to come to their ceremonies and "bless" things and whatever (It happens a lot here in the PNW, where anytime there's something with the dams, they always want the Native people to come like "Oh, yeah, the dam is so great, it destroyed our lives and flooded our historic homeland. Yay electricity!"Anyway, we were disappointed, and started chanting "Go Back To Europe" as the row boats came from the tall ship with all the people in costume.Then, when they were close, the Santee and Kiawah people pulled out bows and arrows and spears and they fucking attacked the rowboats!!Like, period bows, but actual arrows! Firing at the rowboats, running into the water and throwing spears! It was bedlam. They turned around!

This was before #IndigenousPeoplesDay was really a thing. It was still called #ColumbusDay by everyone locally. But I'll always remember that as the best Columbas Day ever.That whole historical reenactment turned into pandemonium when the people realized the Native people in full regalia were not fucking around.It was beautiful.#FuckColumbus

@aBirdieOnaWire I once read this historian and political theorist's write-up about how a Christian fundamentalist reading of the bible requires a restored Israel before the second coming of Jesus and the Rapture or whatever and how all of the fundamentalist Christian Republicans promote and normalize Israel's existence, even while some are rather antisemitic, for that reason alone. Fun fact: I still doubt I'm really Trans. Seriously.There's so much that doesn't fit. I play the games online and joke about the stereotypes, but I don't fit most of them. And I don't fit a lot of the history either. Joking and laughing about obviousness aside, when I'm alone in the dark, I still serious doubt it all. In many ways I feel like a fake Trans person. But a friend gave me a really good question to ask myself: So what?See, here's what I know: My brain feels better on Estrogen. My body feels better with girl parts. I feel more at ease when society sees me as a girl.So, in the end, what if I just like it better this way? What if I'm not really Trans? So what? It doesn't matter to me if I'm not Trans, because I know that I am happier.

There's this whole conversation in my all white male workplace about how wonderful Chat GPT is and how we can use it and the only downside being "occasional hallucinations" and as the Black Trans woman anthropologist I want to talk about the other downside being that "intelligence," whether artificial or not, is vastly fucking different than "mathematical probability" and that "empathy" in the form of "actual emotional intelligence" is something we should maybe focus on because if we look back across the landscape of what structures white men have built with such tools in the past they seem to always end up painful or straight up fucking deadly to people who look like me.But… you know… I'd like to keep my job… so don't harsh on the white dudes' mellow, man.

The stuff I'm reading on women experiencing deep autistic burnout before being diagnosed later in life has really helped clarify why playful, emotionally resilient me is… OMG exactly as @Impossible_PhD described… "…constantly on the verge of meltdown, have no emotional reserves, and is just kind of generally hanging on by my fingernails."
