Correction: I just fact-checked myself. I actually started my job in Cincinnati in 2013 at $46k. More than what they're paying NYC archivists in 2023. Come on!!!!!

As an archivist I am begging, crying, pleading with everyone to put a date on literally anything you ever create no matter how benign. This brought to you by encountering a “third edition” of a state government authored publication with no date to be found anywhere on it.

This story is so deeply upsetting - and it’s also indicative of the kind of racism and sexism that happens all the time across higher ed, because university administration and boards get away with so much bigotry and bullshit that would not fly in many other sectors. Texas A&M forcing so many changes to a contract after a public signing ceremony is the height of bad faith and red flags. Seems like contracts with this university aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. https://www.texastribune.org/2023/07/11/texas-a-m-kathleen-mcelroy-journalism/

I cannot express enough how most universities do not deserve the brilliance of the majority of staff and faculty who work for them. I am so glad I got out of higher ed and at this point it is hard to think of anything that could incentivize me to ever return to it. Never say never, but it’s also super clear to me recently how much damage higher education did to me and how long it will take to heal some of these wounds.

Man, the leftist impulse to tell people what media they should and shouldn't consume is deeply annoying. It's such a surveillance vibe. I'm not even coming at this from a "let people enjoy things" POV, I'm talking about this from an intellectual coherence POV. I am much more of a "hey if you're reading/watching this, consider also putting this in your queue." Some of y'all have never studied how persuasive rhetoric works among normal people and it shows.

like, i routinely read stuff that is 180 degrees from my political and religious values because I don't think you can structure a coherent intellectual argument for/against anything unless you actually engage with shit. Hate reading stuff you disagree with so you know exactly how to argue your own stance is like, a key component to developing a really strong set of political commitments. This is why I am such a fan girl for the Know Your Enemy podcast.

tl;dr, this is why I sometimes read the WSJ and some of the leftists I respect the most in this world routinely make it their business to read about capital-B Business straight from the capitalist source

I asked this a while ago and got no nibbles but let’s try again: I’m a librarian and archivist who will be visiting Iceland and Ireland in mid-October and I would LOVE to meet some library/archives/museum people/get some GLAM recommendations while I’m traveling. Please boost, thank you 💚💚💚💚

I'm in the market for a standing desk with up/down switches (as opposed to a crank). Willing to spend $500-$1,000. Do you have one that you love?

@futurebird @ingrid professional librarian/archivist here. Unless these are the original silver master microfilm reels I generally trust the judgement of librarians involved in deaccessioning decisions and am weary of people second guessing librarian weeding decisions (see Nicholson Baker). my best faith take on a situation without many details is that a library is deaccessioning common microfilm that can be accessed via the NYT archive or other consortium members.

I maintain that the scariest thing about the results of the US election is how much it’s going to accelerate right-wing nationalism around the world. All the places that liberals fantasize about moving to also have insurgent right-wing movements that are nipping at the heels of the current governments, if they haven’t already succeeded in getting a governing majority. There is no safe place to escape to that is not facing the specter of what we are dealing with here in the United States.

I am saying this with my whole heart as a person who has made a significant commitment to professional association work (being on the Society of American Archivists council) but I am existentially concerned for the future of our professional associations as people want the benefits of strong leadership but shy away from getting in the trenches to do exactly the work we need. This gets at a lot of what I’ve been observing https://open.substack.com/pub/grouphug/p/we-dont-love-organizations-back?r=sx43&utm_medium=ios

Leftists in the United States have completely conflated institutional abandonment with a liberatory politics and I think this has been an absolutely fatal mistake. The right wing never gave up on institution building, and our failure to make the same commitments has put us arguably a generation and more behind fighting back against the right wing. We’ll miss these institutions when they’re gone.

Was at the bar tonight yelling about how we could potentially deradicalize young nihilistic downwardly mobile men by reviving the Civilian Conservation Corps in all its masculine youthful energy, yes I am ✨ALWAYS✨ on my New Deal bullshit!!!!

To be clear, I am not super inclined to shed a lot of tears for entitled young men but I am low key hyperfixated on the plight of young men because my present and future safety as a woman is unfortunately shaped quite a bit by the fact that I am currently living in a nation full of disaffected young nihilistic dudes.

Man, we keep having accumulating archivist/librarian layoffs happening at major private universities, at OCLC, at state libraries/archives, etc. I feel like the archives-interested public is aware of what's going down in the federal government but there is very little awareness of how much it's spreading outside of the feds. This shit is so bleak. I really don't know what the future of the profession looks like and that scares the shit out of me.
