It's so frustrating to see Microsoft copy inventions from the Linux world and act like they're new. Ads in the start menu? Come on, we had that in Ubuntu back in 2013 already, you're late to the party *again*.

I've been using #HomeAssistantVoice, the voice assistant from #HomeAssistant for about a week now. tl;dr: I think it's kinda cool, but definitely nerd-only right now.If someone is interested in perhaps picking one up, consider giving my experience a read: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/one-week-of-home-assistant-voice-a-pretty-good-start/826175 :)Hope it helps someone!

A month later and Home Assistant released "Speech To Phrase", which can connect to your Home Assistant to retrieve all your entities and train the model based on sentences generated with that. This system cut down my voice assistant response time from 10 seconds to instant with seemingly more reliable matching. Only thing I'm missing is the ability to say "Play <artist name>", but oh well, that is a small sacrifice to make for how big an upgrade this is in speed :)https://github.com/OHF-voice/speech-to-phrase

I just lost access to a substantial amount of issues on one of my #GitHub projects.I would appreciate if people could help upvote https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/153161 to get more attention.GitHub staff won't even tell me how much data they've hidden from me, which is quite discouraging :(#GitHub #OpenSource #DataLoss

Definitely will be starting future projects on @Codeberg, I'm just too locked-into the GitHub Actions ecosystem for these existing projects right now...

@luc That's terrifying but also... annoyingly stupid? The Netherlands released such an app without Play Integrity years ago called Yivi (formerly IRMA).Regardless of thoughts on the verification, we have an existing government app showing that Google Play Integrity integration is not needed. Wrote a tiny bit about that here: https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-app-android-wallet-ui/issues/10#issuecomment-3077098874

I would like to urge my followers to strongly avoid #TRMNL.TRMNL calls itself "unbrickable" and Open Source, telling you you can host your own server and that basically everything is fully supported: https://web.archive.org/web/20250718183453/https://docs.usetrmnl.com/go/diy/byos. This is not true. The only thing a local server can do is send images to the device and *proxy from their proprietary server*: https://web.archive.org/web/20250718062040/https://github.com/usetrmnl/byos_hanami/issues/178.To add insult to injury, TRMNL is trying to refuse me a refund, in gross violation of EU law.#UseTRMNL #DoNotUseTRMNL

I really hate fedi drama, but I know most of my followers care about *true* Open Source and want the privacy of running stuff locally. Which is exactly what TRMNL promises, but not what they deliver. I know most of my followers would be as devastated as me when the device arrives and... almost nothing works locally.I do hope they turn this all around and actually start becoming the Open Source project they claim to be. But as it stands, they're doing some severe openwashing of their platform.

This device is expensive for what you get. And that was OK to me! I thought I was supporting a big new Open Source ecosystem. It's fine to pay a premium for software. Software development costs money. But I bought this to have all of the functionality *on my own server*, not to be locked in with a proprietary server or be forced to rewrite almost everything myself.Sure, they *promise* they will, but I've seen that promise a million times. They also said you already could. They must prove it.

I would've even been OK had they clearly marked this as not supported yet from the start. Then I had known "okay, they're working on it, but it's not there yet, I'll buy into the system when the basic functionality I need is implemented". I might've even bought it on the promise of future support if I was clearly told it wasn't supported yet.But now I spent money on a product that doesn't do yet what I need it to (and they promised it to) do and I'm being refused a refund and that is not OK.

The documentation has been somewhat updated, though they have decided to keep it marked as "supported", so it's still easy to misunderstand unless you read very thoroughly: https://github.com/usetrmnl/byos_hanami/pull/179/filesI'm also not sure if this makes properly obvious to everyone that it's not just your server accessing theirs: it also means that for example for calendar integration, you have to give their server complete access to your caldav URL and thus all your calendar data.At least a bit more transparent :)

My God I hate this company.I had to yell at them several times to even get them to consider refunding me. And then I had to yell more because they wanted me to pay to ship it back. And now I finally got it shipped back and I get the refund processed mail and they are not refunding the shipping nor taxes. That's over 40 Euros. So now I have to yell at them *again*.Never in my life have I seen such unprofessional and scummy behaviour from any company.

This took *two weeks*. It took *two weeks* to get to the point of shipping it back and getting an email about a refund (they claim it will take 10 more days to actually send the money), and then the refund isn't even complete. How many laws does TRMNL want to break? Zero respect for their customers.

So, Valve, probably the biggest gaming company in the world, just announced 3 new pieces of hardware after the success of their last Linux-powered gaming handheld "Steam Deck".A controller, a small little gaming desktop PC and a VR headset. All of them (aside from the controller of course) running SteamOS, a full Arch-based Linux OS with KDE Plasma.Excited to see so many new people potentially see how cool Linux is when it ships early 2026!https://infosec.exchange/@SteamDB/115538037369555436

Even for those who don't care for gaming, the Steam Machine could potentially be fairly interesting. Valve has always been very open to letting people modify their devices and run whatever OS they want on it and the devices have had a pretty fair price/value ratio. So for those who want a desktop PC without a Windows license, the Steam Machine will be one to watch!Personally, I'll be keeping my eye on the Steam Frame and hope it won't be too pricey 😅

Apparently you can sideload "VR APKs" on Steam Frame because it "supports Android". I assume Waydroid or something?Anyway I will sideload Catima on it if I end up buying it because why not. Who cares if it's useless if it's funny.
