I swear I didn't look at the collared dove Martha. These two mourning doves have been hanging around for a while, usually in the same tree. I applied human body language to this scene in my head and it's pretty comical.#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #MourningDove

Good morning. ❄️🎄🎅It's Christmas Eve morning here and Santa is somewhere in the air, with his hands in the air acting like he just don't care. Sorry ... I couldn't help myself. If you want to watch a Christmas movie, turn to the Hallmark channel, they manage to show Christmas themed movies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Christmas trivia: do you know that Christmas gift giving began in the fourth century in Rome with festival called Saturnalia that honored the Roman god Saturn. In medieval times Christmas gained prominence but gift giving continued. It was the during the Victorian era that Christmas transformed to what is today. The Charles Dickens novel " Christmas Carrol" played no small part. - Information obtained from Bing AI“Christmas Eve is my favorite…I think the anticipation is more fun than anything else. You know, even than Christmas itself.” - Kiera Cass#photo #photography #photographer #photographylover #morning #Christmas #foliage #leaf

Do you have a beef with me buddy?I have this photo of a chubby northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in which the cardinal looks as if he is staring me down. The original was pretty noisy, so there is a loss of detail in the bird's feathers, but I still think it is fun to look at. "The male cardinal fiercely defends its breeding territory from other males. When a male sees its reflection in glass surfaces, it frequently will spend hours fighting the imaginary intruder." - allaboutbirds.org#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #bird #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdsofmastodon #NorthernCardinal

Red Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)There were two red tailed hawks flying way off to the east this morning while we were out walking. I snapped photos of both of them; this one was the best. Not bad considering how far away they were. This one has its beak wide open as if screeching. #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #RedTailedHawk

Beamed down from the heavens. This is the first ruby-throated hummingbird that I've seen this year. It was visiting a hummingbird feeder I set up a few days ago. When I saw the photo, I couldn't help to think it looked like it was in a heavenly light. Maybe, this is a photo for a show like "Paranormal Caught on Camera." 😂 What is really going on is that there is an out-of-focus down spout from a gutter directly behind the bird. I couldn't help but want to post this, I have a better photo that I'll post in a little while. OBTW this is a little male."Ruby-throated Hummingbirds fly straight and fast but can stop instantly, hover, and adjust their position up, down, or backwards with exquisite control. They often visit hummingbird feeders and tube-shaped flowers and defend these food sources against others. You may also see them plucking tiny insects from the air or from spider webs." - allaboutbirds.org#photo #photography #photographer #birds #birdwatching #RubyThroatedHummingbird

Good morning. ☕☕☕28 December 2023Three more days left of 2023, counting today. then it'll be 2024. Back in 1967 the idea of 2024 could be a plot for science fiction. But yet here we are, almost there. Hmmm ... now 1967 could be a plot for science fiction. Now days, I hear people speak of the 2000s as if it were ancient history, all I can say about that is ... huh. But there were people born in the 2000s who are adults today. I retired from the Army in 2000, now sometimes it seems like time just slips away. "Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'Into the futureTime keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'Into the futureI want to fly like an eagleTo the seaFly like an eagleLet my spirit carry me" - Dave Curtiss, Clive Maldoon“They say I'm old-fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast!” - Dr. Seuss#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #morning #time #foliage

Brown Headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater)Here's a female brown headed cowbird that I caught flying a while back. Some people don't like these birds because they are brood parasites, for me though, it's just part of nature. I don't jump for joy when I see them, but a bird is gonna do what a bird has got to do."The Brown-headed Cowbird is a stocky blackbird with a fascinating approach to raising its young. Females forgo building nests and instead put all their energy into producing eggs, sometimes more than three dozen a summer. These they lay in the nests of other birds, abandoning their young to foster parents, usually at the expense of at least some of the host’s own chicks. Once confined to the open grasslands of middle North America, cowbirds have surged in numbers and range as humans built towns and cleared woods." - allaboutbirds.org#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #BrownHeadedCowbird

Good morning. ⛈️⛈️⛈️6 January 2024Here we are in the solitude of Saturday morning before dawn. Sipping coffee and thinking about times in the past. It's natural this early to stifle a yawn. Remember the years gone by were a blast. My father was a sailor and when I was a child, we were stationed at Yokosuka, Japan. We lived on the Naval Base. Near the sea wall, there was a playground, and on the playground, there was an old, scraped sea plane that was mounted with a slide going out the back. We spent much time playing make believe in the old plane. I'm certain that old hulk is gone now because there were lots of sharp and rough edges. Today society would judge it as being too risky a place for children to play.“You're never perfectly safe. No human being on Earth ever is or ever was. To live is to risk your life, your heart, everything.” - Rick Yancey, The Last Star#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #morning #safety #cloiuds

Just walk away. This is a small group of three marbled godwits (Limosa fedoa), one looking out to sea, one napping, and one walking away."Marbled Godwits might be easiest to find on the wintering grounds, where they congregate along shorelines and estuaries along the coast. They forage in shallow waters, sometimes just getting their feet wet and other times standing in water up to their bellies. Their large size, very long, upturned bill, and cinnamon plumage help them stand out from other shorebirds. In flight look for their cinnamon wings and feet that extend beyond the tail, unlike Whimbrels whose feet do not extend beyond the tail." - allaboutbirds.org#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #MarbledGodwit

Vivid VibranceNorthern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are incredibly photogenic. Lately though, I only see them just before dawn and right after dusk when it's too dark for photos."The brilliant red of a male Northern Cardinal calls attention to itself when males are around. You can also find cardinals by getting a sense of the warm, red-tinged brown of females – a pattern you can learn to identify in flight. Away from backyards, cardinals are still common but inconspicuous owing to their affinity for dense tangles. Listen for their piercing chip notes to find where they are hiding." - allaboutbirds.org#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #NorthernCardinal

Good morning. 🐦🐦🐦9 January 2024I broke routine this morning and started the coffee before letting the dogs out. That caused me to forget to turn off the house alarm, so when I opened the backdoor it started beeping. I ended up dashing across the house, losing my slippers along the way to enter my credentials and stop the alarm. That happens once in a while.Back when I was growing up, we never locked the doors to our house or our cars. Interesting isn't it how time changes things. My wife is especially cautious, if I go walk around the yard, I better take my keys because the door might be locked when I get back. Hmmm ... it wasn't that long ago that we had to stick the key in the car door to unlock it."I hate alarms. If they go off, I get really tetchy. I hate them. They just get me going, I'm hyper at the best of times, but they drive me mad." - Kirsty Gallacher#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #anhinga

Blue Jay’s BountyThis blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) was a long way off when I took this picture, yesterday. I cropped this photo way in, so this is 50.6 MP starting to pay off but not perfectly. The biggest problem here was noise. I haven't seen a blue jay in a while, they are not coming to the bird feeders right now. Eye to EyeThis goldfinch (Spinus tristis) was looking at me with this sly look in his eye."When Brown-headed Cowbirds lay eggs in an American Goldfinch nest, the cowbird egg may hatch but the nestling seldom survives longer than three days.
