@Nerina @SrRochardBunson There was discussion about this concept in Scientific American back in the 80's or 90's possibly in the Mathematical Recreations column. At the time there was no opinion as to whether it could be achieved. The apparent design of his looks plausible but IIRC there were some issues raised about equal hour length. Clever and kudos to the designer!

@ParadeGrotesque @Radical_EgoCom The Client you are here to service can have ER equivalent issues we need to fix but they will allow the situation to progress from an easy orderly change to a full blown emergency before they call us in.

@kfogel From my PoV that ship already sailed with the arrival of HTML5 where random people could suddenly poke around at the innards of your computer.

@kfogel HTML5 was when they added all the provisions to query your machine about processor, graphics, battery charge and the arrival of downloading javascipt (mostly) code to run on your machine and before sandboxes were common it could inspect your file system and write files to temp storage.

@kfogel Like sandboxes the ability to lie is relatively new and requires the cooperation of the browser developers. WEI will eventually be worked around but in the mean time it is a cannon aimed directly at Firefox.

@kfogel It was only added to browsers after pervasive tracking via fingerprinting became a thing. And only on browsers that care about your privacy.

@cstross *SIGH* Real fountain pens are not "fancy jewellery" and you can get laptops and many other everyday objects in that category as well. Also real fountain pens do not EVER leak ink.Real fountain pens are more effective than ballpoints and far more pleasant to use. Also, barring damage, they will last for a very long time.

@mike 5 x 3.7 = 18.5?Common voltage regulators used to max volt in the 20-30 volt range so it could be related to parts ratings. Some countries legislate that the maximum voltage allowed where a consumer might contact it is somewhere around 30Volts. I could be to duck under some regulatory requirement for some major market.

@foone Because Devs have absolutely no idea about building a release. They tend to give the job to the most junior person because "it isn't proper dev work" and "how hard can it be". I once went into a Medical Software company ans their first professional Configuration Manager. This is software with a high litigation value. The last release build by the devs took 3 days and they were not able to tell the testers what changes were included. I got it down to 3 hours including comprehensive release notes. Didn't stop one of the directors (an ex dev himself) telling me to "throw out your process we need this done as soon as possible".

So <The West Australian> has a weekly big quiz and his week one of the questions was "Who is the only person to set world land and water speed records?"Their answer was Donald Campbell which he did, but so did his father Malcolm Campbell and so did Sir Henry Seagrave back in the 1930s.Perhaps the question was meant to be about simultaneously held land and water speed records which I know Donald did but, without detailed checking of dates, I can't say whether his father and Sir Henry also did.

@bmac @aliss Wait, what? They had multimedia attention in the 1680's? I'm sure printing had been around a couple of hundred years by then. What did I miss?

@aliss You forgot the "mad queen" rules update where they doubled down and gave the queen all kind of ridiculous powers. I mean, who ever heard of a Queen with more power than the King?

@xkcd It all depends on what voltage it is charged to. 10 Farad at 2.5 volts no problems. 1 micro Farad at 1000 volts ... that could be a problem.
