@tultican While I would have to agree that 3 hours a day of phonics would be mind numbingly boring and ineffective, I have to disagree vehemently that there is no reading crisis. The average literacy level in the US is 6th grade. You cannot survive in a 21st century economy if that's the best you can do. Employers do not train people anymore. They expect you to know where to find information & educate yourself. Also, people at this level cannot read & comprehend books, articles or even handouts on important political & economic topics. They are effectively excluded from informed decision making. They cannot separate nonsense & conspiracy theories from facts. They are easily led by those who tell them what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear. Or they tune out & don't participate at all.It is ineffective for poorly worded posts with bad grammar & misused words to be created for any type of social justice cause. Those are used by opponents to ridicule. Etc and so on.

@tultican I am not advocating for corporate run schools. I am pointing out the schools we have are not working, for lots of people and for lots of reasons.Disagree if you like, but it won't change the facts on the ground. I would hardly call Gallup a biased source. "About 130 million adults in the U.S. have low literacy skills according to a Gallup analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Education. This means more than half of Americans between the ages of 16 and 74 (54%) read below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level."#reading #education #literacy https://www.apmresearchlab.org/10x-adult-literacy

@dibi58 @tultican I doubt you're ever going to get US courts to agree that religious minorities or whatever don't have a right to send their kids to a private school that teaches what they want, however unscientific it may be.But they're trying to take public schools back to the days of christian religious indoctrination for all students regardless of family of origin, and that should not be permitted in any way.

@dibi58 James Kunstler is the origin of that quote. He wrote several good books on urban planning, in spite of turning into a right wing nutjob in his old age. If you haven't read "Geography of Nowhere," I recommend it.

@dibi58 @tultican And just like last time, refugees are going to be turned away from other countries. We're going to have to fix this ourselves.

@dibi58 I was one of the original Oil Drum participants back in the day. Fun times!

@dibi58 I stopped reading Gail because she got very over the top and made some very wrong predictions. (As I myself did back in the Oil Drum days, I do confess.) We thought the Seneca cliff was a lot closer than it actually was. Ironically, it's closer now, and nobody at all will even entertain the idea of peak oil.

@tultican @dibi58 Unfortunately that "minority" includes Opus Dei in high places, and Supreme Court justices like Amy Coathanger Barrett who are members of similar cults.

I am amazed at the number of conservatives who call themselves christians and short change their workers, steal their tips, rely on tips for their wages instead of honest pricing, and refuse to pay for overtime, refuse to reimburse for work expenses, and other sleazy practices. Working for these predatory capitalists is pure exploitation of both local and immigrant workers. It's no wonder nobody wants to do it anymore. #WageTheft #LaborRights #Labor

Refusing to pay cash for labor or overtime is also a violation of Torah, as well as holding workers responsible for the cheap materials and poor facilities you provide.#WorkersRights #Labor

@w7voa He's getting compensated in some other way. The whole point of this exercise was to destroy the one platform resistance movements around the world were using against corporate authoritarian rule.

@KimPerales @w7voa Yep, there's some kind of quid pro quo. We just don't know what it is yet.

@KimPerales And, of course, it is completely false to say people's lives have no value unless they're making money for some corporation.

@BlueWall The US is going to split into at least two parts, maybe three. The best thing to do now is not get caught on the wrong side of the new confederate border. The US as a 50 state going concern is a gonner. There is no middle ground between progressive social democrats and white nationalist christo fascist predatory authoritarians. None.

@grammargirl If you diagram the sentence, it is clearer that "only if" is the opening of the conditional clause. Separating them is rather like split infinitives. Some are ok with that.

@Shells I don't think they intend to do anything about it. As to what *can* be done, the only winning move is not to play. The community needs healthcare that isn't reliant on the white male power structure, that is run for and by black women. The right wing's plan to eliminate poverty has always been actually to eliminate the poor, elderly, and disabled. That also happens to be their plan to end racism - i.e. to eliminate people of other races. It's not just past time to stop giving money to companies and corporations that de facto support or blatantly support this system. It's time to stop trusting them. Past time.

@samhainnight @_L1vY_ Organizations ate going to have to go back to old fashioned printed newsletters and magazines. You can't trust social media to deliver your messages. You can't trust search engines to show people your page. It's time to recognize the internet is irreparably corrupted.
