@bobRegulation can be useful to some issue and a mess in others. For example a law that forbid automatic threatment of human data by through not fully explainable machine learning techniques would be awesome.Unfortunately it's unlikely to happen.

@grainloomIn a square, though, any group of people can met and speak whatever language they desire. This idea that corporates' workplace behaviour should define interactions outside corporation is crazy. It's the root belief implicit in Code of Conducts and it's very annoying if you don’t align with the values dictated by management needs. If people adopted this way of reasoning, English would be spoken on every public place of the planet!Pretty boring, don't you think?

@sir > what would Microsoft have> to do to convince you?Release Windows, Office Professional and SQLServer under a strong copyleft. Donate all related patents to #FSF and #FSFE. Refuse to sign any UEFI payload, not even Windows' one. These are tree decent starting poins.@ParadeGrotesque

@sir #UNIX was never really "designed": it emerged organically as a whole. It was basically a three weeks #hack: see the interview of #KenThompson at https://invidio.us/watch?v=EY6q5dv_B-oThey hadn't even understood how to use the pipes they had implemented! 🤣

@zig@grainloomOne language everywhere would be an enormous loss of culture and human history worldwide. And it would be extremely boring. It's funny to find ways to communicate despite cultural mismatchs. When I went in Brazil or in Northern Kenya most people didn't speak neither English nor Italian. We had to resort to alternatives. From drawings to mimation.Every word you use have a valuable history. And efficiency is not the ultimate goal of life.

@zig @grainloom I'm not sure. After all people talking the exact same language misunderstood each other at a very deep level anyway. And people who don't have any language in common can always find a way to communicate and learn the language of each other.

@grainloomActually if the problem was reverse engineering things, by now we would have Microsoft Office or SQLServer or Oracle or Maya free of charge.#FreeSoftware gives you the RIGHT to study and modify the software! Also as you know having the code doesn't mean being able to read it. While we call Free Software freedoms as #Freedom right now they are privileges as to most people a binary is just as gibberish as a source code.@zig

@grainloomThere are several concepts in every culture that cannot really be translated in English. Or in Italian. Or in Chinese. Or...Every language belongs to a population's culture much like the DNA belong to an organism. If you try to change the DNA you modify the organism. And if it can't fight back it usually succumb. Same for a culture. How much valuable is a culture to humanity?Cultures are to the noosphere what species are to our biosphere.@a_breakin_glass

@grainloomTechnical knowledge has always used the lingua franca of its age. That's because thinking is a very expensive task and we need to distribute it to as much people as possible if we want a hope to learn something.@a_breakin_glass

@grainloomYes actually I've already had the sad experience to find the solution to a problem in a Russian forum. Back when I was studying Russian it was even funny!Today I resort to translators or try to infer the meaning through the code snippets if any.Yet I think you are assuming that all people have your fluency with English, but this is wrong: to young newcomers from highly unrelated cultures (as I was when teen) English slow down learning.@a_breakin_glass

Just learnt about #Jami.Looks awesome.https://jami.net/Anyone knows it?One single issue: in the privacy policy they say they use a #BlockChain: https://jami.net/privacy-policy/I can't find any other info about it but I know that the BlockChain is going to crash soon, so... will it survive to it?/cc @switchingsocial

@switchingsocial @Jami at a first glance it seems you are the first to get the communication architecture right!I was very amused by looking at your website, but then found something weird. In the #Privacy policy you name the #BlockChain: what do you use it for?Which network are you using? Is it optional? Can it be removed? Will #Jami keep working when the #BlockChain will be finally forgot?I can't find the matter named anywhere else, but to me it's fundamental before spreading it.

@deavmi @AmarOk @switchingsocial @Jami Unfortunately my android phone died. I resumed an old Win8 Nokia, but I can't say when I'll be able to fix the android one or buy a new smart phone. Mainly time issues.Yet, I'd really like to see #Jami succeed: I feel it has almost the right architecture. The only issue found while playing with it was the lack of a local contact list even as limited as a pair of (Name X Number). It shouldn't be advanced but should allow you to REALLY use it privately

@ekaitz_zarraga Hi Ekaitz, just investing (too much) time in an Italian political party (the Partito Pirata, italian Pirate Party).I'm still not sure it's a good idea, but it has the potential to change some things a bit.I'm trying to contaminate it with my curiosity, but there is a huge tension between me and those who just want to build another mediatic party that grant them their bit of power. That's why I'm silent here...I write to much there!https://forum.partito-pirata.it/users/shamar/activity

@ekaitz_zarraga Still unsure if it will be something long term...So far, it's just being a lot of debating.I proposed to turn the Partito Pirata to a party whose goal is to spread the knowledge of #Informatics (as described at http://www.tesio.it/2019/06/03/what-is-informatics.html ).This mean not only proposing new laws and so on, but to practically engage into teaching informatics to kids and adults. And obviously to produce free software. But teaching is slow politics: you don't gain power... some hate this idea.
