@simon Comparing Bing's AI incarnation to a "skilled improv artist" seems horribly unfair.To actual improv artists, even the ones who might never go professional. At least they know what their words mean; LLMs aren't even that good.But I share your skepticism in general. 😁

@GayDeceiver I've been snarking for a few days now that as much as the techbros want us to believe that A.I. stands for "artificial intelligence," so far it really only stands for "algorithmic stupidity."Which may be more dangerous to humanity as a whole than *actual* artificial intelligence would be.

@TonyStark You know, as soon as I looked at the line about "up to seven weeks of pregnancy," I looked at the sixth-week abortion bans that have been imposed since Roe was struck down, and I wonder how much of a difference one week actually makes.And we know SCOTUS has zero interest in restoring or protecting abortion rights, but that's where the appeals process is going next, and I can't see this turning out well for the FDA (reminder: Conservatives also hate the "regulatory state.")

These are cowards whose only recourse is to make everyone else more fearful than they themselves are, and they don't even know what they *should* be fearing if they want to survive. @TonyStark I still am not getting past the fact that McCarthy is demanding cuts which will have a painful impact over at least a decade and is only offering, at best, ONE year's respite on the debt ceiling.Even if the cuts weren't going to hurt people who are already vulnerable and can't afford to lose what support we have, that's just - he's not even pretending to bargain in good faith.

Been a fan of science fiction and fantasy basically forever, in just about every form - in print, on the screen, tabletop and video gaming alike. @freemo It does seem like a double standard that modern women can wear skirts or pants, but men can only wear pants, not skirts. (Kilts may be a technically permitted exception, but "kilts for men" are awfully overpriced last time I checked.)

@team Do we know how the committee vote broke down yet? I looked on Congress.gov but I don't see anything new from today.And for the benefit of those tracking it or writing about it, the relevant bills are S.1207 and H.R.2732. I'm gathering from the letter linked in the next post that this was the Senate side, so that may be where we need to focus efforts at the moment? (Please check me on that, FFTF.)

The techbros on top might be clanging the bells about "the existential threat of artificial intelligence," but until, say, OpenAI completely shuts down ChatGPT development, Microsoft yanks the algorithms back out of Windows, and Google reverts their search engines to an AI-free non-chatbot model?Don't believe a fucking word of it.And even when they *do*, take it with a generous supply of salt.
